Pair of shoes = 10
Two bunches of flowers = 4
Boy = 5
Single bunch of flowers = 2
Single shoe = 5

Last sum is 5 + (19 x 2) and do the brackets first

So yeah, 43. Didn't mean to post the 58!

I am well and truly shocked that so many cannot do this after having the 'trick' explained (ie that the boy in the last line is wearing shoes and carrying paper)

really. It is pretty fundamental maths.

So much so that I am going to pinch it for my year 5 students who I tutor as a welcome bakc exercise next week! (and I will give them a hint to look carefully at the bottom row)
