Any lawyers around?

My work's gone a bit quiet (M&A), so I'd like to help other people during this madness.

Anyone other qualified solicitors/barristers on here in the same boat?

Wondered if we might come together some produce some guidance on furlough/SSP/self-isolating/lay-offs/short-time working/redundancies/self-employment/evictions/etc?

Obviously won't be MN-approved, but it might save 500 threads asking the same questions.

I'm in. I do title checking for a licensed conveyancers.

I'm expecting to be put on furlough soon.

I've been WFH since 16th March as DS got a new cough. Officially allowed out now but bosses don't need me to go in.

Hi! Criminal bod here.

Can’t believe we (the self employed lot) have been totally screwed (again). Hope the Bar Council are on it.

nowlook · 29/03/2020 12:17

Yay! @MinnieMountain

There's so much misinformation out there.

I also find it perverse that I'm allowed to advise a variety of businesses every week so long as they agree I'm acting as their in-house counsel each time (SRA advice- don't need to set up as a sole practitioner), but individuals who arguably have a greater need can't access the same advice.

Hopefully there'll be a few of us...

@RumpoleoftheBaileys

I hear you. I set up as a consultant through a limited company four years ago. All I'm allowed to do is apply for a loan! I can't furlough myself because I'm still doing bits and bobs (and even then, I obviously only put a limited amount through payroll).

(Not looking for sympathy on that score- I'll hopefully be fine).

And @MinnieMountain title-checking makes me nostalgic for weeks on end spent going through musty deeds in the strong room when I was a trainee (18 year ago, somehow!).

Me.

I don't work for them but Practical Law Company have an excellent - and free - Coronavirus toolkit on their website, which is being added to daily.

HelloViroids · 29/03/2020 12:25

I’m M&A/commercial and it’s mad busy at the moment - I think everyone with deals in train wants to get them through asap before the next announcement/uncertainty/issue... am not sure how the pipeline of deals will be impacted though, am assuming once these are done it might tail off a bit

nowlook · 29/03/2020 12:32

@BothALarkAndAnOwl

Absolutely! I got a call from PLC last week and they've also given me another 14 day trial. As you say, their Covid19 toolkit is excellent and free. It's working for me as a marketing tool...once this is over, I'll sign up.

@HelloViroids

Yes, I was very much at IM stage on a couple of my deals before this all happened, so no sunk costs for people to recover, just a general hiatus. Glad you're busy though!

Anyone from private client? There's a need for housing/debt I imagine.

I'm happy to put together something on furlough as a first draft for my fellow lawyers to rip to shreds!

Anyone fancy doing another of the hot topics?

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 29/03/2020 13:00

Ah, I miss unregistered land. It's considered too straightforward for my team. It's tempting to hide in the deeds room right now.

That's shitty @RumpoleoftheBaileys. Are the Bar Council any use generally?

I can't do any of the topics you've listed @nowlook as I've only ever done residential property but I can share experience of home working and advice to clients on the current situation.

nowlook · 29/03/2020 13:57

My interest is piqued @MinnieMountain

What do you do? What's more complex than unregistered land? Grin

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 29/03/2020 14:16

Transfers of part, new builds, things involving leases @nowlook. The team leaders in other teams handle unregistered.

This is a bit cheeky but are any of you employment lawyers? I feel really trapped in a corner and need help, and don't know where to go. I put a post up in the work section this morning but no one has replied.

Oops forgot to add the link

MinnieMountain · 30/03/2020 19:43

Have you tried the Legal section in Other Stuff @Whattodo62?

Whattodo62 · 30/03/2020 20:13

Oh I didn't know it existed. Thanks @minniemountain
