What did you do after university?

In the three years immediately after graduating?

I spent the summer working in a residential home for adults with learning difficulties. I then did a one year training course plus some voluntary work. Got my first ‘proper’ (graduate) job after this, and then three years after graduation bought a house (dad gave me a deposit.)

Just interested in some non corona talk Smile

Year 1- Stayed in my uni city and went full time at the pub job I had throughout uni- I loved the city and lots of my friends were staying so wasn’t ready to leave just yet. My career required (a LOT!) of unpaid work experience/short internships and I was lucky to have built a good relationship with the lovely pub manager who let me take lots of time off when unpaid jobs came up.

Year 2- I received a large court case payout and used the money from this to go travelling round the world for a year. I had dreamed of doing a gap year before uni but my parents and teachers all dissuaded me from this, so I felt that spending the money on something more sensible (like a house deposit) would leave me full of regret.

Year 3- moved home for a short period to save some money then moved to London, lots more unpaid work experience and lived in the most cramped house share and was very, very, very poor but towards the end of the year I managed to get my first paid role on a film and things started to pick up from there.

Wasn’t able to afford to rent a flat a one bedroom flat until 5 years after uni, didn’t get onto the property ladder until I was 30, and there were so many times I was tempted to give up my dream job and find a (better paying) corporate one instead but it was all worth it in the end Smile

Extended my summer job - waitressing - into a full time restaurant manager job while I figured out what I actually wanted to do. Faffed about for a year and a half, partying and getting drunk, and generally growing up a bit. Got a low level job in what turned out to be ‘my’ profession, doing post grad quals and a Masters while working full time. Still in the profession, moved jobs a few times, relatively senior now. Got married and divorced along the way, bought various flats and houses, had and have numerous pets!

Worked for my uni for a couple of months changing my final year project into sets of experiments that final year students could use in their studies. Then in the August started working as a software engineer with a small company. Was sent off all around the UK on contracts. Great job and sometimes wish I hadn't left.

I got a technical job in the department I completed my degree in. I stayed there for 5 years while developing a new set of skills.
