Exercise during lockdown

I've just read a post on Facebook (yes I know 😩) about how some climbers had their trip up Everest cancelled so decided to climb the equivalent height in flights of stairs in their house.

I'm not sure I'd want to do Everest but someone worked out the heights of the mountains in the UK and I reckon Ben Nevis is achievable.

So the maths is

Ben Nevis is 1344 metres high. Working on 6 steps per metre we have to climb 8736 steps which is 672 times up the stairs.

Anyone want to join in the madness?

I think my carpet would wear out Shock or my knees.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 28/03/2020 20:29

I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge, but it's a fantastic idea!

I saw the FB post but I live in a flat Grin

Good luck! I have walked almost 9 miles today. Over 7 of those were at work in a supermarket.

That's a good distance, how far is the Pennine way?

I saw that a guy had run round his back garden hundreds of times until he had run the equivalent of a marathon

SquishySquirmy · 28/03/2020 20:36

I've thought about running up and down my stairs for exercise.
What worries me is that I am clumsy, especially when I am tired, so the risk of me falling down the stairs is too high. 😁

Now is not the time to need A&E!
Walking up and down seems safer though. My Fitbit tells me how many staircases I've climbed in a day (with limited accuracy).

I did Joe Wicks pe for kids on Monday and my knees have only just recovered!

JulietTango · 28/03/2020 20:38

Yes I thought about doing it in say 10 minute blocks throughout the day.

I mean we have a few weeks to do it in after all

@HaddawayAndShite... your knees? That's not good. It's okay for your thighs and/or your calf muscles to be sore, but you want to be careful with your knees.

Maybe try some more gentle leg exercises before you work out with JW?

I would suggest these and similar:

I ran round my garden today and 10 laps was 0.5 km, so to do a marathon would be around 840 laps. I think I'd go slightly insane if I did that.,..

JulietTango · 28/03/2020 21:10

But would you have to do it all at once?
I like the idea of having a goal for the next few weeks, something to aim for, something to focus on.

I have climbed the equivalent of 1000m up and down my stairs - up only counted in the climb.

It was fucking hard work! I had to break it up and keep careful count. Took the whole day, spread out.

Having said that, I plan to do this, as well as running a half marathon in my (tiny) back garden!
