Has anyone cut their own hair/kids hair yet?!

I know, one week in, but DS2 was waaay overdue a haircut when they closed and has fine frizzy hair that grows horizontally. DD2's hair was down to her waist and in serious need of a good cut, but she's a nurse just ties it up.

She asked me to cut it yesterday.. had a quick youtube google, and I successfully took 6 inches off with my sewing scissors! It looks so much better and you really can't tell that I did it!

Going to look at tutorials for DS2's next as he's going to look like Ronald McDonald if we leave it a few more weeks!

Mine is fairly wavy, and I wear it in a below-ear length bob . I got DH to cut it yesterday. I washed it, then just asked him to cut the bottom 1/2 inch off, all around. Then I coloured it and blow-dried it. I'm really happy with the result and I'll do it again if necessary.

I’ve bought some hairdressers’ scissors but haven’t been brave enough to use them yet. DH keeps threatening to practise on the dog first Grin

DS needs his doing. DH will give him a number 4

Both of my DSs were way overdue too. DS2 definitely has a shaggy look about him. It's so straight, it hangs in his eyes. DS1s tends to stick up in twenty directions.

Sweatheart · 28/03/2020 01:23

Did my fringe, it seems ok

Gramgram · 28/03/2020 08:08

DS has unruly curly hair if he lets it grow. He needed a haircut before they closed. He came home with some clippers. Charged them up and wanted me to do his hair last night. It was terrifying and hilarious all at once. I didn't realise that his hair was so thick and seemed to come off in lumps but no bald patches in spite of me panicking that I might end up creating one. The clippers apparently had a guard on them though. It took ages and made quite a mess of the newly washed kitchen floor. However he was pleased with the result but next time we're doing this clippering malarkey in the garden.Grin

mathanxiety · 28/03/2020 08:13

Yes, but I always cut mine and DD's anyway. I'm a dab hand.

stairgates · 28/03/2020 08:14

I woke up with the idea of ordering some clippers in this morning!:) House full of mop heads going on here too.

Giganticshark · 28/03/2020 08:16

My neighbour cut her teen son's hair. Shaved completely down to the skin. He looks ill.
I don't even think she realises we're in the middle of a pandemic though.

Vinorosso74 · 28/03/2020 08:22

I trim DD's hair occasionally. She's now decided she wants it cut to shoulder length and donate it. I suggested I just trim it to keep it healthy and leave a big cut to the professionals!
I'm growing my own hair but it does needs trim which will have to wait.

QuimJongUn · 28/03/2020 08:23

I've cut my own hair for 20 years. Also DH's and DD's. Mine is wavy and just past shoulder length. To trim a bit off the ends I comb it thoroughly when damp and pull it into a tight, very low ponytail, then pull the bobble down the length of the ponytail until it's about 2cm away from the end. Snip the end off and repeat til there's no stragglers (two or three times does it). Sometimes I chuck a few layers in by doing a unicorn type ponytail at my parting and lobbing a couple of cm off.

lucysmam · 28/03/2020 08:23

I cut dd1's by about 6 inches. She was well overdue a cut & had been dithering for weeks about what she wanted.

When it's safe to visit a hairdresser, we'll get it cut properly into a style she does want.

HollyHocks13 · 28/03/2020 08:26

I ordered some cheap clippers online and did DS14 hair yesterday. I'm quite pleased with my handiwork, and so is he!

Thegingerpig · 28/03/2020 08:28

I cut my 2 DS’s hair aged 7 and 8 last weekend. Watched a few YouTube videos. Used no. 4 clippers for back and sides and hairdressing scissors for the top. The hardest thing was blending the back and sides with the top. Did a pretty decent haircut on both of them and saved myself £18.

HeyDuggeewatchadoin · 28/03/2020 08:29

Yes, I haven't had it done for ages, no time. It's wavy so just followed the curve in a ponytail and scissored along. Probably took an inch and then did a quick snip of any split ends. It feels healthier.

GaraMedouar · 28/03/2020 08:42

Luckily my DD and I had our hair trimmed a couple of weeks before lockdown. DS desperately needed a haircut but refused - his hair is now long, lanky and in his eyes. I have threatened I may have to tie it back in a man bun or put one of his sister’s glittery clips in ! Grin

Elieza · 28/03/2020 09:01

Now is defo the time to cut hair as nobody will see it for months, by which time it will have grown about, what, an inch a month tops? So three months of lockdown is 3”.

I wonder if anyone will grow out their current style and we will all end up with shoulder length straight hair? Perhaps the hairdressers will be less busy when we go back to whatever the new normal us? Grin

MsMiaWallace · 28/03/2020 09:14

DH cutting my boys hair as we speak.
They're 8 & 5.
He's actually doing a very good Peaky Blinders style . I'm quite impressed & saving £15 at barbers.

ofwarren · 28/03/2020 09:19

We did our 4 and 5 year old boys with the clippers a few days ago.
Number 3 all over

PrincessHoneysuckle · 28/03/2020 09:36

I've ordered some hair clippers with different heads.I be doing ds 6 hair as soon as they arrive.

stellabelle · 28/03/2020 10:13

I think this is right. Many of us have been indoctrinated to think " Oh I couldn't possibly cut my own hair / do my own colour / shape my own eyebrows " and so on. A period of isolation could turn us all into "do it yourselfers" and the beauty industry might have a downturn as a consequence .

waltzingparrot · 28/03/2020 10:17

Ah, cut it - it'll be grand 😁

haba · 28/03/2020 10:25

My children (14 and 11) have never been to a hairdresser/barber Blush

They both have asd and lots of sensory issues, and opticians/dentists once a year is torture for them, so hairdressing has always been done by me. I've been doing DH's hair with clippers since about 1999 anyway Grin

I'm actually fairly reasonable- none of them has ever had to rush out to get it sorted by a professional (though in the early days I did clip off DH's sideburns, which he wasn't too pleased about- how was I to know? I don't have sideburns!)
Both my children have long hair at the moment, so it's just a case of trimming the ends every few months tbh.
At university I used to give my housemates "Rachel" cuts, and they looked pretty good... but I think to switch to professional, I'd need to be able to offer more than one style Grin

Mine needs doing though. I don't usually do my own, as I can't see the back. I have done the MN cut before, when DC were babies but I'm in a more client-facing role now so don't want to look too outlandish (not that anyone will see me for quite some time yet).

haba · 28/03/2020 10:29

Oh- I've just remembered one awful haircut- once when DS was about 7 and going through a particularly difficult patch, I had to cut his hair over four successive days, as he could only sit still for ten minutes, and only allow me to touch him for about five minutes tops Sad
It was like drive by snipping...so much potential for disaster.

I did that over a school holiday and kept him in (he really doesn't mind about that!).

JiltedJohnsJulie · 28/03/2020 10:39

Tried to get DD to have his hair cut before lockdown but he will only go to one hairdresser and her son had all the symptoms of Covid so he couldn't go.

DH did it yesterday for him with clippers. He's cut the back and sides sort and taken some off the top.

Doesn't look totally professional but it will do, especially as he won't be leaving the house anytime soon Smile
