Has anyone cut their own hair/kids hair yet?!

I know, one week in, but DS2 was waaay overdue a haircut when they closed and has fine frizzy hair that grows horizontally. DD2's hair was down to her waist and in serious need of a good cut, but she's a nurse just ties it up.

She asked me to cut it yesterday.. had a quick youtube google, and I successfully took 6 inches off with my sewing scissors! It looks so much better and you really can't tell that I did it!

Going to look at tutorials for DS2's next as he's going to look like Ronald McDonald if we leave it a few more weeks!

My dc had a haircut during February break so it hasn't started looking feral yet, she always had above shoulder hair so will be interesting to see how long it can grow. She has really fine and awkward hair growth so I daren't touch it. I have an undercut and very jazzy layered hair so that will be a horror show, but probably better I leave it well alone, also I haven't sported long hair for about 5 or so yrs.

DD2 has curls. I dampened her hair and took my electric razor to the ends as she was due a long over due cut when the shutdown was ordered. DD1's hair is much straighter and a lot less forgiving about my dodgy haircuts so I think I will be leaving well alone.

Yep I clippers DS yesterday, no5 all over so not too short, and tidied the edges up with scissors.

It needed a cut so I thought if I do it myself at the start of lockdown, then by the end it would have grown out and the barbers can sort out the damage.

I used to be a fan hand at long hair - used to do lowlights and all sorts for people at uni - but I’m no good at short boys cuts and so it’s all over clippers or nothing!

So many typos

I've had a bit of a go at DS's. It's been a multi-stage process - I tidied the fringe up a bit and attempted some layers about a week ago and then took a bit more off the fringe this morning, and it actually doesn't look too bad! I dare not take a clippers to the back and sides though - just going to try and keep it at a length where he can actually see out of the front of it and then be on the barber's doorstep the minute they reopen.

Somewhat scarier prospect - might have to clip the dog! He was well overdue a trip to the groomers and he looks like a yeti already, so if we're still in this situation when the weather warms up I'm going to have to try and take some of it off.

PhoneLock · 28/03/2020 15:43

Usually dh and ds don't let me anywhere near them but I have hopes they will get desperate enough soon. I've tried doing my own a bit but it's my colour I'm more bothered by...all sorts of mess now.

I've seen a couple of memes for that..

I've already had my scissors out on DS2. He has a shaggy mop, and it's a fine balance in keeping it looking surfer dude and not getting too long so it looks like my 1980s school photos Grin

DS1 could be interesting. It's already shoulder length which is pushing his luck on avoiding tying it up. He has ASD and is particular about who cuts it. It grows rapidly and could well be down by the bottom of his shoulder blades by September if he won't let me do it... Fortunately he has no fringe and I do, which is about his only defence from looking like my clone!

DH will let me do his, and I'm not beyond a MN haircut on myself Smile

totallydevoidofideas · 28/03/2020 18:49

BogRollBOGOFF that made me laugh 'looking like my clone'!

My ds 24 is (fingers crossed) en route back home from his backpacking adventure so his hair will be wild. He has wiry curly hair but I think I can do it with my sharp scissors as long as he doesn't struggle too much. I'm looking forward to the challenge! I haven't done it since he was about 4 as it's so tricky. It will be great fun.

Bairnsmum05 · 28/03/2020 19:19

Can anyone recommend cheapish hair clippers that they have used?

CardiffRosie · 30/03/2020 00:09

I 'trimmed' DS hair this morning and now I feel terrible. He looks like something out of Dumb and Dumber :( his hair is so thick, but so straight that any mistake is really obvious. I'm thinking about taking the clippers to it tomorrow, no4 on the sides and a 6 on top, just to tidy it up. I'm feeling awful about it. I wish I'd just left it alone.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/03/2020 11:20

Bairnsmum05
I saw hair trimmers in Lidl on Friday (Italy) but their stock comes and goes...

Bairnsmum05 · 30/03/2020 11:35

I think everyone else has the same idea, the shelves in asda are bare Grin

BiddyPop · 30/03/2020 11:42

I managed to get mine done the week before lockdown.

DH had a booking for Tuesday 2 weeks ago, the barbers closed on Monday night. So I attempted his over the weekend but the clippers stopped working (I had got some off but fairly evenly balanced, I haven't left him lopsided!! ).

New clippers ordered and due to arrive on Wednesday (none in local Boots nor online there when he tried on Saturday, so he ordered online with local electrical store and they would only deliver but that works for us, there's no rush).

He's terrified TBH, of what sort of a mess I will make of it. Doesn't trust me at all, but admits I didn't totally mess it up in what I did manage to get done....Hmm

BiddyPop · 30/03/2020 11:43

DD's is just very long, it could do with a trim of the ends but she only allows that about once a year and it was done just before Christmas so...plaits and ponytails it shall remain...

Windyatthebeach · 30/03/2020 11:44

I got up yesterday and my 3 ds's had been playing Barbers...
Not a pretty sight..

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/03/2020 11:56

We were in family self-isolation a week before the lockdown and I’d already had mine cut but had to cancel an appointment for my sons. I bought some clippers online, looked at a video and just had a go. To be honest it was much easier than i thought it would be. The hardest bits were blending between the longer hair on top and the back/sides, round the ears, and if course the mess! There were hairs everywhere for days even though I tried to be careful. They are both teens and reasonably happy with it.

DH seemed quietly impressed so he might ask me to do his when it gets too long.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 30/03/2020 12:03

I have cut my daughters' hair for years, I don't want to pay the money to get it done at a hairdressers if I can avoid it. My main tip would be to start longer than you plan to end up with. This allows for it bouncing up (especially with curly hair) but also gives you the chance to have to level it up without it then ending up really short. With thick hair just make sure you do it in small thinner layers - i don't mean layer it I just mean tie most up and only let down a thin amount of it at a time. accept it will take you longer than a hairdresser too. Curly hair - don't worry too much, even if you get it completely straight along the bottom it won't look it as it will bounce up. best to trim it and then let it dry naturally and see what it looks like, if it needs layering I would just trim individual curls as then it looks more natural when it falls

I can't say I enjoy doing it - I feel very stressed - but it isn't as bad as we all imagine it will be.

Yogawoogie · 30/03/2020 12:06

Mine is really straight and fine so I’m worried that any mistakes or wonkiness would be really obvious. I didn’t want to grow my fringe out but might have to.
Both DS’s have long hair and are looking forward to no trims for a bit.
Dd is like me and knows she shouldn’t touch hers but I think we will both give in and get wonky cuts soon.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 30/03/2020 12:07

I won't be cutting DD's. It's very thick, wavy/curly, and I'd just ruin it. Lots of plaits for her (she's 5). DS is 3 and his hair is also very thick and wavy. It got cut super short a while ago as he had grommets put in and we couldn't wash it. Its started to get quite long and he looked like Noel Gallagher when he got up this morning. I've never used clippers in my life and neither has DH - he has super tight curls - so I think I'll leave it for now and see what happens.

OneToThree · 30/03/2020 17:54

I just cut ds 9. He actually let me do it Grin
I used normal scissors then cut along the comb like they do in the hairdressers. It looks ok ish Grin

minisoksmakehardwork · 31/03/2020 18:31

@MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles - curls can be quite forgiving of dodgy trims IME. I've done the ends of DD2's because the wailing and crying due to tangling there, from being long overdue a cut was worse than the idea of giving her a wonky one. I took a couple of inches off in the end and it's a lot better for all of us.
