Expired ID

I don't have a current passport. My old one expired over 10 years ago.
Can I apply online and how would I get a photo / countersigned?

I just checked my driving license was in the car.
I rarely drive but do have an automatic license (gained in 1998).
Its expired! I cant believe i didn't know.
Clearly, I wont drive until I've sorted it. Luckily I dont have to right now. But it expired 8 years ago (I didnt realise what the codes on it meant!). I tried to update it online but i wont let me - I';m not on the system as a result of my idiocy rather than anything dodgy.
Now I'm scared silly I'll be fined. I've been stupid but I cant afford a fine as I'm a Carer for my kids with disabilities.
Oh SHIT. I am panicking and not sure what to do.
I know everyone is feeling rattled atm and this is clearly my fault, and I'm now trying not to have a panic attack. Can anyone advise what order to tackle thsi self imposed mess in please?

(I am out for a walk with kids for a bit but will be back asap)

You may not need a countersignatory unless you look significantly different- try and see!
Re the driving license ring DVLA and ask (not sure if they’re working or not but they may be?)
Why do you need ID?

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/03/2020 12:33

FWIW I’ve been stopped with a licence in my maiden name and an old address before, and police were very understanding! And that was way before all this...

DVLA also do webchat (shorter hours, weekdays only, atm) live.email-dvla.service.gov.uk/w2c/en_gb/forms/Chat%20Driving%20Licences?_ga=2.234059677.281163238.1585312489-55559868.1585312489

I think it's the photocard that expires so the ability to use it for ID - you are still licenced to drive until 70. But even if not, they aren't going to be too bothered.

The passport office probably have few people calling at the moment, so try them if the online renewal doesn't work.

Passport applications can be done fully online including the photo. You shouldn't need a countersignature unless you cant be recognised from the old picture

dementedpixie · 27/03/2020 12:41

Once the passport is updated you can use that to update the driving licence

You cant renew a driving licence online without a valid passport. Other methods would be using a paper form or at the post office.
