In January, if someone had said in 2 months time...

You'd have to stay inside at all times, apart from a walk or to get food, what would you have said?
I'll admit when it happened in China, I felt sorry for the people there, but selfishly, pleased it wasn't happening here. Now look at us...

I was certainly getting twitched about it by mid/late Jan. one of my close friends in the U.K. is chinese with family still there so she was tells me every day about cases and restrictions, etc. And I kept thinking what if it happens here. Dh went skiing in France early Feb and I was worried about him going. It was already in Italy and the little cluster in France in a ski resort popped up then as well. I rang him to check which resort he was in. I was prepping by then which is why the stock levels in my house are quite good and I have loads of loo roll!

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 08:54

Oh yes and of course the threads on here which I followed from the start. I remember asking mnhq for a dedicated topic and being told we didn’t need one. Grin

Megan2018 · 29/03/2020 08:56

My husband was already talking about and started buying extra food each week. I mocked him Blush
Now very glad we have a stocked freezer, larder of tins and plenty of pasta and loo roll!

No panic buying-he bought these things months before any issues in shops.

vegas888 · 29/03/2020 09:05

Yet today we have it in the news that these vile markets are still there, don’t people ever learn 😡😡😡😡

PeytonManning · 29/03/2020 09:09

It’s incredible the amount of posters who knew about it all along and even had the foresight to buy paracetamol instead of ibuprofen. Who knew there were so many epidemiologists on MN?!

middleager · 29/03/2020 09:09

I thought the WHO had banned wet markets? I suppose policing that is another matter.

vegas888 · 29/03/2020 09:14

This will be the next problem as reported on Sky News

Videos have emerged of desperate people in Italy begging for help because they have run out of money and food.
Well into its third week of the coronavirus lockdown, Italy is still seeing many hundreds of people dying each day.
Progress in containing the COVID-19 spread is slow, hope and patience are fading and the economic cost is becoming ever more acute.

x2boys · 29/03/2020 09:36

Isn't Peyton !

x2boys · 29/03/2020 09:36

Isn't It*

merrygoround51 · 29/03/2020 09:48

I am utterly shocked looking at Italy and am expecting that train to come this way.

However I am in Ireland and we have no issue with food and supplies. There are queues but that is to manage social distancing but there is plenty of food.

The food waste in parts of the UK must be huge

merrygoround51 · 29/03/2020 09:51

@middleager That Liverpool match you mention is going to be remembered as a very bad decision. Spain now think that a lot of their issues stem from the Atalanta match

StirCrazed · 29/03/2020 10:51

Spain also had a festival .. was It women's day? Early March. Idiots.

Thighmageddon · 29/03/2020 11:17

I have to say I'm impressed with how many on here are now acknowledging that they were wrong to not worry and prepare. It's not that often huge swathes admit they were wrong.

Hopefully an upside to this will be that preppers are no longer mocked and are asked how to prep efficiently.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 11:21

Well I did manage to get paracetamol before it all sold out. But then I’m medical and suspected that with something which fucks your lungs ibuprofen might not be the best. But I got ibuprofen as well to cover all bases.

TSSDNCOP · 29/03/2020 12:28

I was definitely smugly saying "I'll just place an Ocado order".

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 12:47

I precooked delivery slots for as far forward as I could. Am good for the next 2.5 weeks.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 12:49

Prebooked

SingforAbsolution · 29/03/2020 14:53

@PeytonManning

I topped up my Brexit stash. I keep track of world news. Many people don't or say 'they' wouldn't allow it to happen here.

merrygoround51 · 29/03/2020 16:01

@Thighmageddon I am not at all saying I was wrong not to prepare. The needless hoarding and stockpiling by people who believe themselves to be ‘prepping’ is what has caused these massive shortages of paracetamol and toilet roll.

The government should have prepped much more obviously and there will be big questions asked afterwards

Individual prepping has been of little benefit, I mean what do people think they have prepped for, wind up radios etc - the mind boggles. Even if I had stockpiled tinned food etc what good would it have done me. To this day there is plenty of food around (in Ireland admittedly, where apart from 1 day, panic buying hasn’t been a response )

IndecentFeminist · 29/03/2020 16:06

Nah, prepping (6 months ago) hasn't caused this.

Thighmageddon · 29/03/2020 16:26

Merry I have neither hoarded or stockpiled.

I have my usual amounts of loo roll, rice, pasta, lentils, tinned tomatoes etc as I had many months ago.

I always have enough stocks of everything in to last.

merrygoround51 · 29/03/2020 16:49

Last how long though

AgentCooper · 29/03/2020 16:53

I doubt I would have believed it. I would have just thought it was the professional doom tourists as usual.

I work at a university with a big Chinese student population and was worried in January that lots of them might end up becoming ill after coming back after the holidays. Then I thought, if everyone’s ok after 2 weeks we’ll be fine, as that’ll mean nobody has it. That feels like a million years ago.

PeytonManning · 29/03/2020 16:54

@SingforAbsolution Well, that's fair enough! I also keep on top of world news. That said, March 1st, DH and I went away for our WA, returning March 5th. Although the change in atmosphere in the airport was palpable on our return, I would still never have imagined that our suburban town, thousands of miles away from Italy and China, would be locked down 5 days later. In January, it wouldn't have even crossed my mind!
