Tesco - three types of fruit only.

I went to the supermarket - local Tesco this morning for the weekly shop, I bought what I would normally buy in normal quantities. I get to the checkout and load up and as my shopping is going through I'm told I can have three types of fruit only. I had plums, apples, bananas, strawberries, blueberries and some reduced raspberries I buy all of these most weeks (sometimes grapes and clementines too) and I was told I needed to choose which three I wanted to buy. I had a bit of a grumble at the shop assistant saying I would now have to come back to the supermarket again when we are supposed to be limiting where we travel and that it was counter productive. Even more so that there was a fair amount of fruit in the reduced section meaning that clearly there is enough to go round everyone. I did apologise to the assistant afterwards but I think it is a really silly idea. We have four people in our house and there are many households that have more and fruit is a key part of most people's diet, and the shelves were in no way empty.

In the end I just bought the fruit I couldn't get in Tesco in another supermarket.

No restriction in fruit and veg obvious in my tesco this afternoon. I got a bunch of bananas, several lemons and three different veg items.

They checked how much booze I had though! But three bottles and a 4 pack of Estrella turned out to be fine.

Corona virus, pneumonia, blood clots, rickets and now scurvy.
This year is just getting better and better! Confused

I've been this evening and bought half a dozen types of fruit. We did scan as you shop and got picked for a random check. Nothing was mentioned about how much fruit we had and didn't notice any signs. There was signs on other stuff like this of beans but didn't see anything on the fresh stuff.

fruitpastille · 26/03/2020 22:27

I'm trying to avoid top up extra shops so probably got a bit more fresh stuff than usual. Despite signs the nice checkout assistant used common sense - e.g. 3 tiny bags of haribo was fine (3 children to placate). Also I bought 4 loose carrots instead of a bag of them and he was fine with that too. We had a nice chat about guitars and martial arts too Grin

fruitpastille · 26/03/2020 22:28

The only empty shelves were flour, eggs, pasta and loo roll. And tins were sparse.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 26/03/2020 22:34

Don't blame the supermarkets.
Blame the twats stockpiling that made the stricter measures be put in place in the first place.

Crinkle77 · 26/03/2020 22:39

Fruit really shouldnt be a key part of your 5 a day due to the sugar content. Most of that should be veg. Some countries actually specify 5 veg 2 fruit

Any need for the lecture?

Mumto1girl3boys · 26/03/2020 22:44

@mypoorfurbaby the clap was actually for carers not key workers.....

224as · 26/03/2020 22:47

Strange, my Tesco was also limiting to 3 of each item per customer but I bought raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and bananas with no issue. I assumed it would be 3 of each type!

Hellokittymania · 26/03/2020 22:50

Please remember that there are people without any food… This is why… So much was taken that some of us are left with nothing… I haven’t been out for nearly a week now, so I don’t know how things are looking in the sauce… But they weren’t good last time I was in one…

copperoliver · 26/03/2020 22:54

I only got 3 bananas in my shop today, ordered more. So I will have to make my banana loaf tomorrow with only 3 bananas. X

redeyetonowheregood · 27/03/2020 07:16

On Sunday I was limited to three fruit, three vegetables and three salad items. I hadn't realised until at the till. I had tried to buy two packets of leeks, two heads of broccoli and a bag of carrots and had to out two back. Same with fruit and salad.

I could tell the cashier felt really bad about it and I was apologetic because I hadn't realised.

TrashPanda · 27/03/2020 07:52

I've just had an email to say Tesco online will now be max 3 of an item and 80 items in total, crap for a weekly shop for 5. My normal weekly shop is more than that without the extra lunch stuff required.

NichyNoo · 27/03/2020 07:58

Same here - I could only buy three meat items which, when trying to do a weekly shop for a family of 4, will not go very far. And only two bottles of the 4-pint milk. Not selling the 6 pint bottles any more. It means I’ll need to start going to Tesco maybe three times a week now Sad

jay55 · 27/03/2020 08:06

I was worried about limits yesterday when shopping, then realised it was self checkout only and could have stocked up a bit more.

I think there's a huge difference in someone obviously buying enough fresh produce for their family and someone buying 100 rolls of loo roll and ten sacks of rice.

Especially when there is a lot of marked down stock, yesterday where I was milk, desserts and yogurts had loads of yellow labels.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2020 08:43

Oh shit.

Not enough fruit means my child will have to go on medication. That is really going to help having a disable child with one of the conditions that makes them vulnerable....

Time to break out the died beans....

Hoppinggreen · 27/03/2020 08:47

I went to Sainsburys yesterday, there was plenty of fruit and veg.
I bought about 5 different types of fruit, including 12 bananas. The restrictions there were no more than 3 of any one item, which I suppose should have meant I couldn’t get the bananas - having said that 3 packs of 4/5 bananas would have been more that the 12 loose ones I got
No pasta on the shelves though

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2020 08:47

This is what happens when people panic buy...

Last week the supermarkets were getting grief for not rationing items so everybody could get some. Confused Now they do then that's wrong too.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2020 08:56

It is wrong if they are letting them go off though.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/03/2020 08:59

I had a bit of a grumble at the shop assistant saying I would now have to come back to the supermarket again when we are supposed to be limiting where we travel and that it was counter productive.

You took a pop at the shop assistant? Seriously, have a word with yourself.

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2020 09:01

Hopefully if this goes on indefinitely then the tills won't allow scanning of items over allowance and it won't be down to individual cashiers to decipher the rules.

Blownaway22 · 27/03/2020 09:42

I had the email from Tesco this morning too limiting to 80 items in the total on-line shop. We’re a family of 6, all at home and buy way more than that on a normal week when the kids are out. I don’t have any issues about cutting back but one size doesn’t fit all, a couple will need much less than a family, a family of three less than a family of six. I’d much prefer to go to our local Tesco, as they suggest in their email, but it’s a 25 mile drive and I can’t decide whether or not that’s okay. Probably not.

LeniSpring · 27/03/2020 09:45

Surely you just buy a whole bagged bunch of bananas or a whole bag of apples etc. That way they can't tell you to take some out and put them back as they are pre packed.

Saying you can only have 3 single bananas is ridiculous. If there's 5 people in your house, that means 2 people don't get any fruit surely.

TrashPanda · 27/03/2020 10:10

You can buy the bagged ones, for example with pears which my kids love, I can buy 3 loose or 3 packs which have 5 pears in each so 15 pieces. I buy the bagged ones at the moment so I can get enough but they are more expensive by weight than the loose ones.

TheFaerieQueene · 27/03/2020 10:14

Frozen fruit or tinned fruit in juice(drained obviously) is a good alternative. Mix with yogurt/porridge/overnight oats and you are sorted.
