Kirstie Allsopp says it’s ok for the queen and Prince Charles to move to different places during this crisis, and that Devon is her home

It is though and you have people on here going to pick up their son/daughter from uni but that is deemed ok so how is it different?

Lynda07 · 26/03/2020 06:19

I agree with her. She is hardly going to be spreading the virus around, she and family can self isolate in Devon and feel more relaxed. Prince Charles is in the same boat. It may engender ire from those who do not have somewhere else to go but that's life, some are better off than others. They aren't flaunting it, just saying.

They are not the sort of people so castigated - rightly - on here who are going to possibly drain local resources and go out, eating, drinking, shopping & potentially spread disease in the area surrounding their country home.

Theredjellybean · 26/03/2020 06:21

I think she makes reasonable points.
My dp and three of our four dds and me are all in our house in Cornwall.
We consider it our home, we spend varying amounts of time between here and London.
I am probably 50/50
The others 70/30
We pay council tax, use local businesses, I volunteer at the local food bank when I am here.
We feel this is as much our home as our London flat and like kirstie allsop.. This house has freezers full of food, a garden for dogs so we don't have to go out to parks etc, and plenty of loo roll.
We are supporting our local farm shop and pub who are doing delivery and takeaway.

If that's her home then I don't understand why people have a problem with it

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 06:22

‘That’s what any reasonable person would do, that’s what the Queen has done,’ Kirstie said.

‘The Queen left Buckingham Palace and went to Windsor Castle. Prince Charles has gone to Balmoral, and he’s not Scottish.

It’s clear who she thinks are her people, isn’t it?

Nmagain · 26/03/2020 06:24

Just wait until the inverse snobbery comes out on here. Classic Mumsnet

5zeds · 26/03/2020 06:26

Our local farm shop and pub are working full pelt just to keep up with the people who were already here’s needs. I don’t think MORE mouths is going to “help”.

I think most people who have two houses would choose the most comfortable to hole up in. That’s rather different than having a holiday rental and moving in to it, which was more how I read the Kirsty situation.

LesLavandes · 26/03/2020 06:27

I think Boris means you should stay put in one home. Not to travel.

I too have a second home in France. If I tried to go there now, I would get arrested by the police.

The police are stopping people in uk now to check it's essential travel

CodenameVillanelle · 26/03/2020 06:29

She travelled from London to Devon with an infected person so they could have a more comfortable quarantine with a garden. That doesn't make it better.

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 06:30

Just wait until the inverse snobbery comes out on here.

This isn’t about inverse snobbery. Resources in these areas are over-stretched anyway, they don’t need royalty-wannabes imposing themselves because they have toilet roll in their third home.

Divebar · 26/03/2020 06:35

Well I wouldn’t have travelled to Cornwall if they only have one hospital. How long is it going to take to get an ambulance to you if you need it? And the problem is dozens of families fled down there. So no... not helpful to the permanent residents. If KA normally lives in Devon though that’s a different story although to compare yourself to the fucking
Queen and heir to the throne is hilariously entitled. The Queen does it so why can’t I ? I don’t have a problem with her as a rule but I think that comment is horribly misjudged.

Nmagain · 26/03/2020 06:41

So I’m assuming the people who are against what she did are giving the posters picking up their children from other places to live with them a hard time?

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 06:48

So I’m assuming the people who are against what she did are giving the posters picking up their children from other places to live with them a hard time?

Why are you assuming that?

VivaLeBeaver · 26/03/2020 06:52

Seems fair enough if she does consider that her main home and only uses the smaller London one when working, etc. Which makes sense when you have kids. Though I suppose the fact which would prove it is where do the kids go to school......Devon or London? Or do they board?

middleager · 26/03/2020 06:57

I've seen the FB posts from people in Cornwall and Devon. I don't blame them for being angry.

Their hospital and services are stretched. An infected person was brought into their small community, to a house that Kirsty rents out as a holiday let for 2k a week.

I do not agree with what she did.

Lardlizard · 26/03/2020 07:00

Here they go to school in London

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 26/03/2020 07:00

Or did last year

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 26/03/2020 07:05

So fair enough there’s more hospitals in London, but there’s loads more people in London to fill those hospitals
so it would interesting to know the person to bed ratio in different areas

OP posts:
Divebar · 26/03/2020 07:07

In which case she’s talking bollocks.... she clearly lives in London and travels to the Devon house for weekends and holidays ( assuming they haven’t all moved in the last year)

User18492725204065241 · 26/03/2020 07:07

The wealthy will always do what they want and get away with it. I'm surprised she was stupid enough to go to the press about her bright idea. The divisions being created now will last a long time imo, she may regret alienating those that watch her programs. Harmless tv toffs don't seem so harmless now when they are running up and down the country to second homes spreading the virus.

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 07:08

But she has vegetables and paracetamol in her third home!

She hasn’t a clue, has she?

5zeds · 26/03/2020 07:09

It’s not just the person to bed ratio though is it? Devon and Cornwall have a significantly older population. Transport and infrastructure are more challenging.

Graft · 26/03/2020 07:11

Kirstie is currently in East Devon - she wouldn't go to the Welcombe house because North Devon is utterly backward in terms of transport and health provision (and everything else, tbh). But her main residence is absolutely in London.

FamilyOfAliens · 26/03/2020 07:11

And the person she took there is infected!

She needs to sack her PR people.

TreeTopTim · 26/03/2020 07:13

I heard on the BBC news that Prince Charles was already in Balmoral when his symptoms started.

@middleager apparently Kirstie has two houses in Devon and it wasn't the one that she rents out it is the other one that she went to. I wonder if anyone is in the rented out one at the moment. If her partner was already I'll she should have stayed in London. If he got ill while in Devon that's different.
