Will using cocoa power, best before 1016 do me any harm?

I worried that my cocoa powder was out of date but thought it would be fine, turns out it's very out of date! Does this matter?

Wrong thread..l

It will be absolutely fine. When you use it it will need to be cooked, in a drink or recipe, and any ( non existent ) food spoilage bugs will be dreaded

acatcalledjohn · 25/03/2020 21:00

Did it belong to King Canute?

I tend to avoid foodstuffs that pre-date the Norman conquest but then I'm a bit of a snowflake

Waste not want not..

I don’t think I’ve actually ever checked the date on cocoa powder before! Unless it’s moving, I’m sure it will be fine

TrainspottingWelsh · 25/03/2020 23:12

Sorry to disappoint you op, but it's a fake. Morrison's weren't around in 1016. If you'd said Sainsburys you'd have a genuine antique.

It will be fine, in 1000yrs the ancestors of the panic buyers will still be eating their way through bags of pasta handed down the generations.

Cocoa fine. Just don’t ever go near out of date treacle...

Actually, Flu has a point about the treacle. I had a tin in the cupboard, unopened and way past its BB and decided to use it for a fruit cake. Started to prise the lid of - and it went BANG! The lid blew right off! I think it had fermented. It was still ok and I still used it though Grin

Yes, I had a treacle can go bang! Treacle sprayed all over the ceiling. But it's just sugar so still fine.
