£48 worth of petit filous

I saw a man buying £48 worth of petit filous. Nothing else. And I thought the supermarkets were banning this kind of buying.

What is the craziest thing you have seen?

We're a vegan family and you will be shocked to hear that so far I've not had to battle anyone for the last block of tofu, or seen anyone have 150 tubs of nutritional yeast conviscated at the till Grin

DogInATent · 19/03/2020 09:40

There are so many messages going round asking people to pick up stuff for the elderly and vulnerable

There's a local Covid-19 "Angel" group (very high 'hun' score) that's full of talk about picking up things for the needy. But theses are almost all people who are picking up useful things as they see them in case they find someone needy later on. This is not helping.

Wannabangbang · 19/03/2020 09:42

Why haven't they stopped this fiasco, i thought it was 4 items only.
Tbh i don't care what the reasoning is, it's selfish. I have a large family but will only be taking what we need

Wannabangbang · 19/03/2020 09:44

maa1992 really why not just drink black coffee or tea, don't get it and it tastes bloody grossConfused

hmmmmn · 19/03/2020 09:45

My SIL said a couple went into tesco THREE times with a trolly each and went for a fourth but was stopped 🥴

Fatted · 19/03/2020 09:46

Leave the man and his love of fromage frais alone. Did you not politely tell him that the animal ones are made by the same people but cheaper?!

SFCA · 19/03/2020 09:46

To be fair we fostered twins that would only eat petit filous. They had additional needs and were 9 years old so that would have been a pretty standard shop for us!

BookWitch · 19/03/2020 09:47

When my dad was in his final weeks a few years ago, the occasional petit filou was the only thing he ate.

As long as people are calm and not abusing the retail staff or pushing and shoving, I won't judge

Iwalkinmyclothing · 19/03/2020 09:47

SMA Infant formula (we REALLY needed) and a rather older lady was buying 6 of them to put in her coffee, husband explained we had a baby and she said "we all had babies once"

I would take them out of her trolley and invite her to involve the security staff.

Most have and thats why rather than be some selfish fool its much more likely there was a genuine reason. Its way more likely he had called and explained his reasons and they had put that amount to one side specially because he had a child with additional needs or was making lunches for children in need as others have suggested. Realistically not many shops even large ones have that many on the shelves normally even without the current situation.

Curious78 · 19/03/2020 09:49

I get that some people have things they like to eat but at most, people should really be accounting for 14 days isolation in their cupboards and no more. Even the 'at risk' groups when they are on lockdown don't need to stockpile. 48 packs of petit filous is wholly unjustified however way you dress it, quite frankly.

mygrandchildrenrock · 19/03/2020 09:51

He could have been buying them for a day nursery, we give them to our children and would get through that many in 2 days. Or, he just be a pillock!

No you clearly don’t get it. I know so many autistic children who only eat two or three foods at most.

If all a child ate were these yoghurts, or they were one of 2 or 3 foods they ate, how many do you think they’d eat per day - 6? 8? 12? Then 48 isn’t two weeks worth is it? My twins get through a box of breadsticks per day between them and they do eat other things.

Tesco delivery driver last night said people are playing the system re rationing and even booking slots (different people at same house booking slots for 100kg shopping). Meanwhile lady who has just had serious operation and kidney problems is housebound and cannot get even half of her normal shop via delivery. He was rightly cross that selfishness is causing issues for vulnerable people.

Also said shelf stackers had been shouted at for not stacking shelves quick enough. I said people should be thanking all the shop workers for keeping the show on the road.

On the upside, plenty of community action going on - mutual aid.

One can only hope that anarchism (in the positive political sense - google the definition) is springing to life amidst political incompetence of our 'leaders' and mundane street level foolishness and panic buying.

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 19/03/2020 09:59

Tesco delivery driver told me that the delivery before me were bulk buying and had ordered 20 tubes of toothpaste (this was over a week ago) I wondered if there was a story behind that because that's not an item that's been running out

@Scruffyoak
I was just about to suggest doing that if usual brands are not available.

Valkadin · 19/03/2020 10:05

I always have a decent amount of food in. I developed a cough two days ago. I don’t think it’s covid but highly unusual for me. My DH workplace has them wfh and DS college was suspended on the same day I developed my cough. So we are all at home these past two days. Both DH and DS are huge, not remotely overweight but DS is 6ft 5 close to 6ft 6 and DH is 6ft 2. They have unusually fast metabolisms and eat a lot. I have had to tell DS he cannot eat his usual vast amounts.

Scruffyoak · 19/03/2020 10:11

Throughout january and start of Feb I ordered extra UHT, toothpaste etc and I always thought the drive through I was mad but is now thinking ahhhh

PatriciaBateman · 19/03/2020 10:13

I think this would be an odd/fresh/short-life thing to panic buy, you can't freeze it (without it going horrible in my experience), so there is probably another reason.

However, I do actually buy masses of fromage frais myself as part of my normal weekly shop (12 x 4 packs = so 48 pots), because I have an autistic child who only ever has 2-3 different items he will eat, and this is one of them. So I wonder if that man was doing something similar.

My child would get through more, but this is as much as I can store in my fridge.

Fimofriend · 19/03/2020 10:14

Our butcher just raised the prices on everything. He has no lack of neither wares nor customers. We have previously been very fond of him, but I don't like people who take advantage of a crisis situation to make some easy money.

Justaboy · 19/03/2020 10:21

Ey opp! a gent could win a ladies hand these days with a present of a loo roll pack;)

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/03/2020 10:23

My DS eats only two things. He is severely autistic. You would no doubt judge me if you saw me in the supermarket.
