Help my brother with his proposal!

So my lovely little brother has been living with the woman he loves for the last three years. She is amazing, and a wonderful match for him. They've discussed getting married for a while, and he's nearly got everything lined up ready to go down on one knee and propose formally in the next few days.

The problem is, he was going to take her to the Royal Observatory and propose there, as she loves stars. That's now shut, due to Corona. So I suggested he set up a telescope out in the garden, with picnic mat and basket and stargazer a bit before popping the question. He was going to borrow all the stuff he needed from me. Except I have now discovered that I donated my old toy telescope a few years ago as my kids had grown out of it...

Now he needs more star-based ideas! Please, can you help with suggestions, and I'll pass them on to him!

Could he get one of those planetarium lamps and set it up in the house somewhere?

No need for a telescope - just go outside on a cloudless night.

Maybe a drive out to the middle of nowhere - I was amazed at how many stars we could see on the coast of South Wales in the summer. Also the Yorkshire moors. Just somewhere without light pollution. Just check out an app to make sure it’s a clear night.

Aha, he has one of those planetarium lamps! Thanks for the ideas so far, they are all helping!

Decent binoculars are better than most commonly available telescopes.

He could name a star with her married name., although this does assume she will change her name and won’t work so well if she doesn’t.

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 18/03/2020 20:04

Pick out a constellation which means something (her star sign, or an animal they both like or whatever), and learn where it is so he can point it out.

There's an app (Sorry, can't remember the name) that tells you where they are even if it's cloudy.

Your bro sounds lovely! Let us know how he gets on.

I like the naming the star, as far as I understand she is quite keen to change her name to his! He got a star chart made of the night they first met, for their 1st Christmas I believe, he's a real romantic soul. And I like the constellation idea too. Maybe he can find one from his chart.

I did suggest binoculars to him (definitely my binoculars were better than the kids telescope, sight-wise) but we weren't sure how to work out the ring presentation with them - easier to dangle the ring in front of the business end of the telescope!

I will definitely update with how it all goes down! (I've also sent him a link to this thread so he can see the suggestions too, he knows I've asked for help on here!)

Oh name a star Mrs xxx xxx and then roll up the certificate with the ring round it,

PopcornAndWine · 20/03/2020 15:50

Sky Guide is the app which tells you where constellations are - you just point it at the sky and it tells you what's there, even if cloudy as pp said.

Sittinonthefloor · 20/03/2020 15:54

If they’ve been discussing marriage for a while then aren’t they already basically engaged?

OhCaptain · 20/03/2020 15:57

But what’s the point of telescopes and binoculars??

“Hey look, it’s a star. By the way will you marry me?”

It’s a bit mad! Just a nice evening together, even under the stars (wrapped up!) would be better than taking turns with binoculars!

Cleanuponaislefloor · 22/03/2020 19:53

From what I understand, they did some stargazing and he popped the question... and she said yes!
