I've been on the phone to 111 for...

24 hours.
Except for one hour around 2am where I napped.

My daughter started with a cough and temperature yesterday. She's 6.

But before this she came out in a rash.
It covers her stomach and back. And now it is spreading up her neck and onto her arms.
She came out in this after starting new creams from the dermatologist, so I stopped the creams but it is still spreading.
I'm unsure if this is a reaction to the creams, a viral rash or something completely different such as scarlet fever.

I phoned the GP and asked for a phone call appointment. They refused advising me.to phone 111 (who I was on the phone to on the other line already) 🤦

What am I meant to do? If she has scarlet fever or something she needs antibiotics, but at the same time I don't want to infect anyone with anything that could potentially be serious.

I'll try that. I won't hold my breath, but I'll try. Anything is worth a try at this point.

Is your gp not doing appointments for children.
Morons if not.
She’s not well, she has a rash - you need advice, medication potentially.
I’d ask to speak to a gp and NOT the receptionist.
Or if no joy go to a and e or a minor injury unit if you have one.

adaline · 17/03/2020 09:42

You could ask on local Facebook groups to see if anyone would be willing to drive you if needs be.

Our local group has been inundated with people wanting to help out where they can - it's really nice to see.

This is where the system is ridiculous. Not every illness over the next four months will be COVID and people are going to need treatment for any number of other things. How are we supposed to get treated?

Bluebell121 · 17/03/2020 09:46

Are you in Leeds? My friend waited 3 days for a call back with her 1 year old with a temp of 39.8 not eating weeing or drinking bottles so she rang the actual hospital and they told her to go down and put masks on

CaribouCarafe · 17/03/2020 09:46

Maybe you could try using the online 111 service as well?

111.nhs.uk

If I were in your position I'd be extremely firm with the GP surgery - tell them that if they do not agree to a phone consultation for today then you will log an official complaint against the practice.

I would tell them that it's unacceptable that you have had no access to healthcare advice despite your child's continuing symptoms.

I would also stress that due to your own healthcare issues you have no means to drive your child to an alternative practice/A&E/Walk-In department and don't have the means to pay for a private consultation. You have been on the phone to 111 for 24 hours with no success. Therefore the onus is on them to make sure that your child receives the care she needs.

Don't let them hang up the phone without having agreed to a phone consultation.

No time for politeness in these circumstances.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 17/03/2020 09:46

I spoke to the doctor. He said phone 111.
I think he's being lazy to be honest because he retires this week, which is why the surgeries.have merged, but they don't have another GP in until Friday.
So that's really helpful.

I've done the online 111. That said I need to see a GP!
But GP is still refusing.

An honest question. If people are being told not to go to the gp if they are symptomatic (temperature/cough) but to self isolate, why is it that you cant even speak to a doctor.... where are they all? I can understand people being told not to just turn up at the gp but surely a blanket instruction to phone 111 is just crazy. Why aren’t doctors doing phone consultations?

Op, as others have said you need to be persistent with the receptionist and ask for a doctors phone consult. Or phone your pharmacy to see if they can offer advise.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 17/03/2020 09:48

I'm trying the GP again now.
I'm not feeling hopeful.

Just seen your update. Phone go and tell them what 111 said and stamp your feet until they listen BrewWine

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 17/03/2020 09:51

For god's sake.

When I have known I need to be seen by a GP but they say no appointments (I was admitted to hospital from my visit), I said fine I will have to ring an ambulance instead and I will tell them you refused to see me. That got me an appointment. But you can only do it if you know you really really need to for your DC to be seen. If she is essentially fine - running about and laughing - they will never take you seriously again.

CaribouCarafe · 17/03/2020 09:55

Could you try calling your local walk-in center directly?
You can find their details through this service: www.nhs.uk/service-search/other-services/Walk-in%20centre/LocationSearch/663

I think a lot of people are going to fall through the net during the next few weeks as everyone is focused on the virus. Treatable conditions will go untreated as people won't be able to be seen. My GP says phone 111 but, as Op says, you can't get through.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 17/03/2020 09:55

That sounds very much like the scarlet fever my daughter had. Just go to OOH/hospital and refuse to move.

amatsip · 17/03/2020 09:56

Hoping you have tried piriton incase it is a reaction, does your doctors subscribe to LIVI – See a GP by video. In minutes. www.livi.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6sHzBRCbARIsAF8FMpV_gLmWgg0jBzqbwyvvu9hNH3_wKSEGyERa2JKEJGIWm1QUR6ovWiAaAqdHEALw_wcB if they do download it.

PeppaisaBitch · 17/03/2020 09:58

Take her to a pharmacist. They will probably tell you to go to a&e so follow their advice.
I know how hard it is with no money and no childcare but your child needs to see a dr so you have to take her.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 17/03/2020 09:58

@alloutoffucks that is poor advice re: just because she’s running about. Scarlet fever needs antibiotic treatment

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 17/03/2020 09:59

GP may be terrified to see anyone, if he's retirement age he could be vulnerable (not saying he's right but it could be a reason). Of course no reason not to give a telephone apt though.

LuluJakey1 · 17/03/2020 09:59

I wonder what GPs are doing. Not saying they are not doing anything but wonder what they are doing. Ours is closed. You can ring and a receptionist decides if she will schedule you for a telephone consultation or if you should be contacting 111. There are 4GPs. Usually surgeries from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday (2 hr break 11-1) with 4 GPs and Saturday morning with just 1 GP.
What is happening to all that time?

user1493494961 · 17/03/2020 10:00

If you think your daughter is seriously unwell, I would phone your local hospital and ask for advice.

EmbarrassingMama · 17/03/2020 10:05

If she doesn't want to watch the TV I'd be extremely worried as disliking light is a key indicator of meningitis. A&E now.

Olawisk · 17/03/2020 10:06

Can you ask on your local fb group for a lift if needed ?

Where I live it has a page and I’m 100% sure someone would help.

I would if a neighbor needed help.

Hugsgalore · 17/03/2020 10:08

Can her dad not help? Is there no friend family you can call on for help?
