How long can you hold your blink for?

I went to the opticians a few weeks ago for a contract lense check and I mentioned my eyes felt dry. The optician put some dye in my eye and agreed that I did indeed have very dry eyes. They start drying over after a couple of seconds, other people can get to 8-10 seconds apparently (very impressive of them)

This just got me wondering if I have to blink more regularly than the more wet eyed people? So using the very scientific one elephant...by three elephants I need to blink but I can hold it, by five seconds it's getting fairly uncomfortable but by nine elephants my eyes are burning and I have to give in to the sweet sweet blink.

Anyone else care to join my experiment, am I really the most dry eyed of them all?

I got to eight elephants. But they were speedy elephants. On rollerskates, not strolling by. Grin

Thanks everyone for responding to my experiment! You've put a smile on my face this morning Smile

I somehow just made it to sixteen elephants, I'm so tired though it could be that I just fell asleep with my eyes open?

Apparently the world record for a person not to blink is 49 minutes, 59 seconds????? I'm not even sure how that's possible. Looks like we all have a lot to learn.

I could possibly manage that, if I accidentally rubbed my eyelid after touching superglue.

You need a cat Justgivemethehobnobs, maybe it's just the weird cat lady in me but I can't help occasionally getting into a competitive human/cat stare-out I'm so banking on other people admitting they do this too, it can't be that weird . See it as blink suppression training Grin

AlCalavicci · 17/03/2020 11:44

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 17/03/2020 12:34

We should televise it AlCalavicci, regional heats, national championships, no one has to leave the house we could live stream it. Obviously sponsored by Optex other brands available Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 17/03/2020 12:38

My first go was 19 elephants.

I used to practice this sort of thing at the end of exams while waiting for the time to finish. Holding my breath was another post-exam entertainment. Grin

cookielove · 17/03/2020 12:43

19 elephants!

PreseaCombatir · 17/03/2020 12:45

I made it to 15 elephants

QuestionableMouse · 17/03/2020 12:49

Timed myself. I really wanted to blink at fifteen seconds but it passed off.

ClashCityRocker · 17/03/2020 12:53

42 elephants!

I cannot wait til my husband comes home to tell him.

BearSoFair · 17/03/2020 12:54

19 seconds before it started to get uncomfortable, I blinked at 26.

Justgivemethehobnobs · 17/03/2020 18:07

@Thelnebriati oo that has just made me wince!
@thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter I don't have a cat, but am willing to consider investing in one to get to champion starer status!

@ClashCityRocker hope your husband was suitably impressed!
@soupforbrains soo how was your meeting?

OP posts:
goose1964 · 17/03/2020 18:10

18 and I stopped because I was bored 😃. I also have dry eyes.

Thelnebriati · 17/03/2020 20:46

I have a hobby where I have to glue bits together and so far I have superglued my fingers to the arm of the sofa, my jeans, a spoon, and each other

Justgivemethehobnobs · 17/03/2020 22:08

@Thelnebriati Hahaha, that is very impressive! I've superglued my fingers together before and remember the panic! You've actually just reminded me that the first time I really saw my husband annoyed was when I kicked a bottle of nail varnish remover all over his wooden floor that I had been using to try and get superglue off his duvet cover.
What happened to the spoon? Did it survive?

soupforbrains · 18/03/2020 03:14

@Justgivemethehobnobs annoyingly my meeting was very interactive.

I work in Health & Safety so i think you can imagine how much fun we’re having at the moment 🙄 I then ended up rushed off my feet all day. Hopefully tomorrow will bring new opportunities to improve on my PB.

@ClashCityRocker a) was your husband impressed and b) what is his PB?

AbigailFreemantle · 18/03/2020 03:21

27 elephants here.

soupforbrains · 18/03/2020 09:19

damn it. I have an eyelash in my eye this morning which i can't get out and it is severly hindering my blink-holding attempts. Angry
