Those with audio books - favourite narrators?

As I'm in the high risk group, I wont be going anywhere for a while.
I love audio books and originally ' read ' my favourite authors. Often found tho I didn't like the narrator.
So I started to choose by narrator and have found joyous books i never would have.
Who are your favourites.
Mine include Angus King, Carolyn Bonnyman, Peter Forbes, Aoife McMahon and Davina Porter.
Really dont like Jonathon Keeble, his womens voices are just so off for me.
Dont really like many American narrators either.
So come on introduce me to some new ones.

Alison Larkin. I'm listening to her complete Jane Austen and am in love with her voice for (any of) the Male leads. Highly recommended as you get 40 or so hours for one audible credit.

I love Juliet Stephenson as an actor but don't like her reading voice.

Mark Meadows who reads TheLuminaries!
Oh my goodness, that was incredible.

I wasn't crazy about it at first, but a couple of hours in I was blown away.
There's one scene where there are 16(!) people speaking. He makes it easy to follow and utterly convincing.

I am a little in love with him.

I like Steven Lacey.

Penelope Keith narrates the Agatha Raisin series. I find her voice very comforting. Her accents are terrible, but I think that's part of the charm!

Pacey not Lacey

Caroline Lennon. I adore her. Her deadpan reading of the line in Marian Keyes "This Handsome Man" when she say "trannies tumbled out like skydivers" made me howl on the tube Grin

Marian Keyes actually too, I just love her. Penelope Rawlins is good too. Gerry Halligan I like too.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/03/2020 10:39

I love Rupert Degas

Chamomiletea you can look up a particular narrator in Audible by putting their name into the search box. Or if you already have a book and like the narrator you can search for more by the same narrator by clicking on their name where it says 'Narrated by:'.

Cakemonger · 17/03/2020 10:58

Miriam Margolyes is fabulous

Whathappenedtothelego · 17/03/2020 11:21

I like Stephen Fry, Miriam Margoyles, Tamsin Greig, and Martin Jarvis. Would happily listen to anything read by any of them. Every single pause and emphasis is absolutely note-perfect. (Whereas sometimes with other narrators, I spend my whole time being distracted, because they placed the emphasis on the wrong part of the sentence.)

Surprisingly don't like either Paul Whitehouse or Olivia Coleman.

Hibernocaledonian · 17/03/2020 11:58

My favouriteshhaveto.be when the authors narrate the book themselves.

I love the Hairy Bikers so when I found out that they narrated their own book I had to download.

I also love David Tennant.

Shosha1 · 17/03/2020 11:59

@turnandfacethenamechange I love Caroline Lennon, I found Jane Casey through her narration.
Robert Glenister reading Robert Galbraith is very good too.

@blackamericanonosugar Thank you for that tip - I had no idea you could search narrators. After this thread I shall have a look. So important to have a good one Smile.

A second vote for Sean Barrett. I love his voice. As well as those mentioned above, he narrates the Jo Nesbo Harry Hole books, and he is Iorek Byrnison in Northern Lights. DH says I listen to Sean Barrett more than I listen to him Blush

Anyone else cringe inside when most male narrators have to put on female voices? Stephen Fry doing Mrs Weasley drove me up the wall.

I LOVE Jane Casey! I've listened to them so many times. Can't wait for the new one. I ship Maeve/Derwent so much.

Zara Ramm is exquisite. She narrates Jodi Taylor’s St Mary’s Chronicles.
Kobna Holbbrook Smith who does the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch.
Micheal Sheen who narrates La Belle Sauvage by Phillip Pullman.
Lucy Price Lewis who narrates Jodi Taylor’s Frogmorton Farm books.
Prunella Scales who narrates Eva Ibbotson’s Which Witch?
Martin Jarvis who narrates Good Omens by Pratchett/Gaiman.
Peter Serafinowicz who narrates Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World.

Bobbin98 · 18/03/2020 03:02

Off to name change now as I’m now instantly recognisable to anyone who reads this post and has been in my car!

Binterested · 19/03/2020 13:40

Adding to the love for Martin Jarvis. He narrates Kipling’s Plain Tales from the Hills in the most lovely way.
