Hi wise mumsnetters,

I’m aware we can’t nessesarily give medical advice on these threads but I’m absolutely at my wits end and not going to ring 111 as to not clog the phone lines with Coronavirus around.

Around 3 weeks ago my potty trained 4 year old started going for a wee every 10 minutes, I asked if it was sore, she said no. A week later, it was still going on so I got it dip tested at the GP, it come back “negative”. This week she’s still doing it, so I ordered some urine analysis strips off of amazon.

Now I used to be in training to be a nurse a few years ago, so I just thought I’d do it myself. I’m aware I never officially started a nursing job, but they change colour they’re quite simple! The ones I bought online are exactly the same as we used in the hospital I used to work in.

So bobs your uncle I did it at home yesterday about 8 times in all of her wee, and they all come back with the blood markers elevated, the leukocytes elevated, and very very small traces of protein. (I have attached pic)

I rang GP back and they said they wouldn’t do another dipstick test as it was negative last week! I pushed back and said no I’d tested at home only to be told it means nothing... I get their point but she’s got all the symptoms etc and now she’s crying every time saying it stings.

I rang again today, and if I drop a sample off tomorrow they’re going to culture it at the lab - however doesn’t this take days? I can’t face another day of her like this but I also can’t seem to do anything else about it? Has anyone got any ideas please? Sad

Disclaimer: I’m not medically qualified but currently on antibiotics for a uti so couldn’t ignore your post.

Do you have a local Walk-In Centre where you can take her to? I know it’s not ideal given the current situation but a uti can escalate pretty quickly, especially in children so best to get her started on treatment asap. Poor little mite.

Oh poor little one ☹️.

I’d be taking her to an out of hours dr/walk in clinic. I don’t think it’s reasonable to wait when she is displaying classic symptoms, is now in discomfort and result is testing positive.

scoobdoob · 17/03/2020 00:07

You need to send a sample. It will only take a couple of days. It is best to know for sure and what antibiotics she needs if positive.

Trouble with dipsticks is that they are very sensitive. You can get that result if she is slightly sore.

Horrible to have to wait but at least you will know one way or the other. But obviously if she becomes unwell in herself then don’t leave it.

Strange question but make sure she isn’t constipated because that can sometimes make them feel like they need a wee.

Good luck

Ok. They won't do another test bc one was done last week, but they DO need to see her bc of her symptoms. Have they refused an appointment?

31weeksgone · 17/03/2020 01:29

They refused an appointment (I can understand why given everything CV related!) and said they would send it off for culture, I’m just worried how much longer it’ll take before she’s given something the poor love Sad will see what they say when I drop the wee in in the morning
