I nearly cried in Aldi today

I went to Aldi to do my weekly shop today, as well as pop a couple of extra things in just in case we get stuck (flour, veg to freeze), plus a chocolate milk for the homeless guy outside the store. I only had a limited amount to spend, basically carer's allowance for DS2, so was being quite careful & also bearing in mind that neither DH nor I will be able to work & it's not been a great year already for us.

It was very busy but everybody was being very nice & polite & chatting to each other, which was quite nice. The queues were massive! When it got to my turn & the total flashed up, I didn't quite have enough money for everything, by about £2, so had to put 1 thing back, very embarrassing Blush

But then when I got outside, the lady who had been behind me at the checkout came up to me with the item & said she had bought it & wanted me to have it! She was so kind, I was bowled over. Made me quite emotional that people can be so kind.

I just wanted to share that story because it has restored my faith in humanity. Thank you so much Aldi lady Flowers

This reallly warmed my heart, especially with everything thats going on right now. You both sound like lovely people, we need many more like you at the moment.

I went out today to get some medicines and everyone was very pleasant and courteous and we all had one pack of paracetemol from the stock. The pharmaceutical store staff were so lovely considering it must be one of the worst jobs to have in a pandemic.

I'm also on a FB group for deliveries and stuff, I think once the original panic is over, people will realise if they are at reasonably low risk, they will be able to help others.

PeninsulaPanic · 16/03/2020 14:05

Love your post, OP. Times will get darker for a while but goodness shines through, and you're a light bearer. So was the woman behind you in the queue, the homeless person who inspired you to give, and everyone who posted their appreciation on this thread. They recognise the Light in you because it's in them too.

We're not doomed, we're just on a difficult path, but we're on it together.

Oooooh, clearly a global crisis brings out the woo in me Wink

Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity. What a kind thing to do.

A stranger gave my 84 year old DM a box of chocolates yesterday Smile

discotils · 16/03/2020 14:15

Glad to hear there are some genuine and lovely people out there x

Jenasaurus · 16/03/2020 14:18

Thats so lovely, very heart warming, thank you for sharing

My DD was behind a lady in a queue once whose card didnt go through, and offered to pay for her, the woman was furious and said, she didnt need charity, so it can sometimes go badly.

Good on you OP. And not just because you and Aldi Lady did a good deed, but because those you saw you and those reading this thread may choose to do the same.

RoseyOldCrow · 16/03/2020 14:25

You are lovely, and clearly deserve much loveliness back. As does nice Aldi lady.

That's lovely OP, and a timely reminder that not everybody is a selfish arse, and that actually, most people are nice, it's just that they're quieter about being nice than the horrible ones are about being horrible!

EwwSprouts · 16/03/2020 14:29

That is so cheering. Thank you for sharing.

GA2012 · 16/03/2020 14:30

This made me emotional. There really is some kind people in the world. Both you for thinking of that homeless guy and the lady who helped you!

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/03/2020 14:30

Acrossthepond I agree. I was pleased to see the box for the local food bank was full.

Deadringer · 16/03/2020 14:32

Lovely story opFlowers

UsernameUnknownn · 16/03/2020 14:33

That's so nice ☺️

Frenchw1fe · 16/03/2020 14:33

You’re a kind soul and so is Aldi lady.

At a worrying and confusing time, when there is so much selfishness this is really nice to read.

MinkowskisButterfly · 16/03/2020 14:39

That genuinely made me well up. So kind of you and her. Flowers

Canshopwillshop · 16/03/2020 14:44

What a nice person you are and the lady who helped you too. I really hope we see more of your types during this crisis and I’ll certainly be trying to do my bit too.

Whywhywhynow · 16/03/2020 14:44

What a lovely thing to read. Cheered me right up Smile

planningaheadtoday · 16/03/2020 14:48

Thank you for sharing that. It helps restore faith.

MozziesLoveMe · 16/03/2020 15:03

So lovely to read this right now.

I once offered to help out a woman in Aldi who was 20p short and she looked at me like I asked if I could poo in her bag! Confused I like to think that she was just completely thrown by the gesture and not that she was just horrified at the notion of human kindness.

Don't mean to derail the point if the thread. It just reminded me, but your story has restored my faith a little OP Smile

middleager · 16/03/2020 15:08

The chocolate milk of human kindness.
I need this story today Smile

slimecentury · 16/03/2020 15:12

Really sweet. I thought it was going to be a story about greed and no bog roll!

MintySpud · 16/03/2020 15:15

If the total was higher than expected, do double-check your receipt to make sure the supermarket didn't overcharge you on one or two items. There may have been a little unofficial corona price-gouging going on.

hm246 · 16/03/2020 15:19

I was prepared to read a fighting in Aldi story then!
What a lovely heart warming story.
