How much exercise do you do?

fitnotfat · 14/03/2020 09:26

Just that really...and what do you do?

I'm mid 30's and want to get fit.
I have a part time job that is fairly active (on my feet a lot, lifting/carrying a bit) and generally try to walk places, but I have no gym membership or active hobbies for instance.

I feel quite lazy and struggle to motivate myself and have visions of everyone else attending spin classes and running marathons!

Am I the only one who doesn't have a specific exercise routine?!

I'm average female height and healthy weight, but want to have a healthy body.

What's your exercise schedule?

Darlingsleepthief · 14/03/2020 09:27

I do weights 3 times a week

DonnaDarko · 14/03/2020 09:29

I'm 35 and I only really got into exercise a few days ago.

I do yoga most days. I also do the Mr and Mrs Muscle videos on YouTube every other day, usually on my lunch break.

I work from.home otherwise I would have a really long commute and I wouldn't have the time for exercising.

DonnaDarko · 14/03/2020 09:30

*years not days FFS lol

Weights 3 times a week. Cycle to work 3 out of 5 days which is 6 miles each way, need the car during work for the other two. However they might tell us to work from home soon so I might cycle at lunch time to keep the cardio fitness.

TheChippendenSpook · 14/03/2020 09:33

I've got a rowing machine and try and do 30 minutes, a few times a week.

TheChippendenSpook · 14/03/2020 09:34

I also have a job that involves lots of walking and cycling.

PinkBuffalo · 14/03/2020 09:39

I only got into last last year! It is not too late I am 30s too and work full time
I do weights at gym (gym is all classed base so I am coached) Monday
Yoga twice a week at gym
Light boxing class one day (although and to chek out of this temporariliy)
Spin &circuits one day
Kettlebell & legs bums and tums A couple of days
Spin and ab work and bootcamp at weekends
I do a bit of walking occasionally and run a little bit in the summer too. I am better being shown what to do though
I love it usually Smile

Dacaday · 14/03/2020 09:44

5 x 30 minutes hiit workouts with weights/resistance bands at home straight after work. Also very active job. Am late 40's.

ShouldIRun · 14/03/2020 09:45

I walk to and from work 25 mins each way or scoot (non electric) 12 mins each way.
I have a physically active job.
I run twice a week and do half marathons.
I'm 51

PS I haven't always been like this, and am probably fitter now than I've ever been.

roarfeckingroar · 14/03/2020 09:45

Weights once a week (was 3 times before pregnancy), hot yoga three times a week, swim once or twice, walk everywhere (London) usually 8-15 miles.

fitnotfat · 14/03/2020 09:46

Oh seems like I really am the only unmotivated one! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thanks for sharing your routines!

I guess I'm going to have to stop making excuses and crack on with doing something.

I like the idea of YouTube workouts at home as the gym near me is eye-wateringly expensive (David Lloyd). Can anyone recommend good videos for beginners?

Also with yoga, what kind of yoga do I need to be doing to get an effective workout?

Thanks everyone.

Gym 4-6 times a week. Mix of yoga, weights, hiit and swimming. I also run and do small amounts of exercise at home.

puds11 · 14/03/2020 09:49

I love David Lloyd’s and think it’s well worth the money but do get its expensive.

There are yoga and Pilates videos on Prime that are good for beginners, or put in a beginner search on YouTube. Yoga and Pilates is all about making sure your muscles are engaged and you are breathing correctly. Do this with a 30 min power walk a day and you’ll see improvement quite quickly.

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2020 09:50

"Gym 4-6 times a week."

Wow. How do you have the time?

Dacaday · 14/03/2020 09:53

Bodyfit by Amy on you tube is fab OP. Quick short workouts suitable for all levels.

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2020 09:53

I do 15/20 minute HIITs around 3-4 times a week. The Body Coach is good for me, although I’m aware he annoys the hell out of a lot of people. I ignore his social media presence and just look at his workouts which work for me. I’m the fittest I’ve been for years, I’m 51.

Also do weights depending on how I’m feeling. All done at home in my kitchen.

Invest in some kettlebells and/or weights.

Pipandmum · 14/03/2020 10:01

My kids are old enough to take care of themselves so I go to the gym three times a week.
@Gwenhwyfar It's a matter of making it a priority. A friend with full time job and younger kids runs on her lunch hour. Another trades off with her husband- she gets up extra early to go for a run while he deals with the kids, then she minds them while he goes to the gym at the end of the day. On weekends she runs with one of her kids and he takes the others to the gym with him.
You can do workouts at home- I still have dvds and even vhs of my favourites but I imagine they are available via YouTube.
However being active generally all day can be better than an hour at the gym if you are then sedentary the rest of the time.

CatAndFiddle · 14/03/2020 10:02

I do free weights and bodyweight resistance training. In my kitchen, after putting my son to bed. 4 times a week, 1 to 1.5 hours a session. I have been doing it for about 5 years now. It has done wonders for my mental and physical health.

puds11 · 14/03/2020 10:06

@Gwenhwyfar I’m currently on mat leave and the gym has a crèche Grin It will be different when I go back to work, closer to 4 times with more home workouts being done.

bulletjournalbilly · 14/03/2020 10:14

Run 3 times a week .....

I should do more and mix it up to be honest.

I'm 43

MrsJBaptiste · 14/03/2020 10:19

Gym 4-5 times a week.

I do a mix of cardio and weights and am a red sweaty mess by the time I leave! I love it though and in my early 40s am the slimmest and fittest I've ever been.

MrsJBaptiste · 14/03/2020 10:21

OP Try Hasfit videos on YouTube.

I think they're great, there are loads of different vines for varying levels of fitness.

fitnotfat · 14/03/2020 10:27

Thank you for all the YouTube suggestions! I'm checking them all out.

In the 30 odd minutes since I last posted I've done two Mr&Mrs Muscle beginner HIIT routines 👍🏼

How many/often do I realistically need to do each day? They were 10/12 minute routines and I tried two different ones...?

OP posts:
squeekums · 14/03/2020 10:29

Oh seems like I really am the only unmotivated one
Oh hell no
I'm 32, never been to a gym, never been on a diet, never had a exercise schedule of any kind
And I have no desire too

puds11 · 14/03/2020 10:36

What you need to do is not go barreling in and do yourself damage. I’d say aim for 20-30 mins 3 times a week and build up over the next few weeks to either more days or longer work outs.

Good luck!!
