How much exercise do you do?

Just that really...and what do you do?

I'm mid 30's and want to get fit.
I have a part time job that is fairly active (on my feet a lot, lifting/carrying a bit) and generally try to walk places, but I have no gym membership or active hobbies for instance.

I feel quite lazy and struggle to motivate myself and have visions of everyone else attending spin classes and running marathons!

Am I the only one who doesn't have a specific exercise routine?!

I'm average female height and healthy weight, but want to have a healthy body.

What's your exercise schedule?

On YouTube: yoga with Adriene, and fitness blender for workouts.

caulkheaded · 14/03/2020 10:53

Gymondo routines every day - prob 10-20 min ones.

Swim twice per week
Gym every other day.
Aerial yoga weekly and bouldering as often as possible.
I sometimes cycle at the weekends, or go for a ten-fifteen mile walk with friends.

Caramel78 · 14/03/2020 10:55

I pay for the FIIT app every month which has hundreds of 25 min home workouts including HIIT, yoga, Pilates, dumbbell and kettlebell classes, circuits etc. They add new classes every month too. On a good week I’ll do 5 classes per week (4 cardio/weights type ones and 1 yoga or Pilates). I also have a Fitbit and try to keep my step count up every day. Some days when I’m just at home I’ll only do 4K steps but if I’m out and about then I’ll do 12k steps.
Another good tip for adding exercise in when at home is to jog fast on the spot during each advert break when watching telly

I recommend yoga with adriene, I first got into yoga by doing one of her 30 days of yoga challenges. They're all on YouTube so take your pick! They're good for all levels and she always provides options for the harder poses.

I started out with popsugar when I first started but fitness blender and Mr and Mrs Muscle are all really good, and they all usually provide modifications if needed. I also like the popsugar video dance workouts. I think they have a playlist.

I can't remember the channel but my sister has told me about walking videos on YouTube. I think you're basically walking in place but they add in moves to get a bit of a workout. I think they're probably good if you're just beginning and want to get a bit active.

Most importantly, try things out so you can find something you enjoy. If you don't enjoy it, you won't stick with it and exercise should not feel like a chore 😊

Honestly, I never exercised until my 30s and I was so unfit. If I can do it, anyone can!

JorisBonson · 14/03/2020 11:02

Literally nothing 🤦

My biggest problem is I'm a lazy fucker. I'm up at 5.30 every day and can't fathom doing anything at that hour. When I get home I just want to sit on my arse.

I have a free gym at work, and I'm too bloody lazy to use that.

I've also never found a form of exercise I like and feel hugely paranoid in the gym.

Sigh. I really need to get my finger out.

Caramel78 · 14/03/2020 11:03

Good YouTube channel for “walking at home” workouts is Lucy Wyndham-Read. It’s basically just marching fast on the spot for half an hour but with other exercises like squats, lunges added in every 30-60 seconds.

OhioOhioOhio · 14/03/2020 11:08

Hardly anything at the moment.

vampirethriller · 14/03/2020 11:11

Walking two hours a day with the dog. Three hours if I have to go to town.

wowfudge · 14/03/2020 11:21

I joined a gym which does small classes at set times. It's all weights based and I love it. I go on the way home from work or before if I'm up early. I'm already noticing I'm fitter and stronger.

wowfudge · 14/03/2020 11:22

It's three times a week plus an additional session not in a class session.

fitnotfat · 14/03/2020 11:42

"Honestly, I never exercised until my 30s and I was so unfit. If I can do it, anyone can!"

Thanks @DonnaDarko I'll use you as my inspiration!

Also thanks for the YouTube walking suggestion @Caramel78, I'll definitely try that.

I agree with @DonnaDarko, I was so unfit until 2.5 years ago when we got a treadmill. I decided to do ten minutes a day for RED January- well that was it! I kept going despite feeling like i was going to die, it very quickly gets easier and I caught the running bug.
Currently I run 3-4 times a week, anything from 5km to 15km+, I do yoga on YouTube maybe 4/5 times a week, I have a punchbag which I do hiit training with twice a week and I go to bootcamp on a Saturday morning and more frequently in the holidays.

The key for me was committing to a small enough thing that I couldn't really duck out and made it into a habit, then gradually built up the time and frequency.

fitzbilly · 14/03/2020 12:32

I have slowly built it up over the years, and now do something six times a week.

I work full time so I fit it in as follows!

Run three times weekdays at 6am for half an hour.

Gym three times a week at 7:30pm. Often the same day as my run day. Dh sorts the kids out on these days. These sessions are weight training with a coach.

Run Saturday at some point and long run Sunday morning.

Rest day once a week.

About once a month I give myself a break and scale it all back a bit for a week.

It is hard work and requires me to prioritise it over just chilling out or having more time in bed in the morning. I start work at 7am though so getting up at six isn't really unmanageable. I used to just faf about at that time. Dh sorts the kids out in the morning too if they wake before I'm back at 6:30.

TravellingSpoon · 14/03/2020 12:47

Yoga once a week, spin once a week and then I try and get to swim a couple of times a week, doing 50-100 lengths each time, depending on how long I have.

I think you have to find something you enjoy doing and it will stick. I hate running for example and can never find any enjoyment on it, so that wouldnt work for me.

Icare1234 · 14/03/2020 13:03

Usually gym once a week, but haven’t been last two weeks due CV. I’m not fit at all.

SubordinateThatClause · 14/03/2020 13:04

None

MinnieMountain · 14/03/2020 13:12

I swim 80-100 lengths three times a week.

It took me ages to realise that swimming is my favourite thing, so I just stick with that.

Toria70 · 14/03/2020 13:13

I've got 2 spaniels - they're my exercise regime. We walk for 45 minutes in the morning and then 30 minutes after work. In the summer, we add in a 3rd walk in the evenings, so I will at least 2 hours a day then. At weekends, we normally do a long walk (2 to 3 hours) on a Sunday morning too along the local river.

I walk at a brisk pace so I'm always slightly out of breath, and it's never a chore or challenge. I love it.

Ludways · 14/03/2020 13:22

I do weights and then some cardio 3 times a week, It usually takes about 1.5hrs. I'd love to do more but I still have teenagers at home and I work full time. I'm 52.

Fifthtimelucky · 15/03/2020 12:37

I'm in my late 50s and since taking early retirement last year I have done more exercise than at any time since leaving school.

I have joined the gym and am usually there four mornings a week - either starting in the gym and then doing a class, or doing a pool-based class followed by a swim. I also try and walk 3 or 4 afternoons a week (though have not done this with all the wet weather we've had recently). I also walk for all short journeys instead of using the car (unless eg I have heavy shopping to carry).

I've lost 3.5 stone so far (aiming to lose at least 2 more) and have gone down a couple of dress sizes. My legs (while still fatter than I would like) have more muscle tone than ever before and I am starting to see signs of stomach muscles. More importantly I don't get out of breath walking up hills or stairs!

YeOldeTrout · 15/03/2020 12:41

As much as possible today & in near future before we all get ordered to stay indoors.

PanicAtTheTesco · 15/03/2020 12:47

I jog (very slowly) 5k twice a week. I try to fit in two or three 1-2 mile walks as well. So not enough!

I totally agree with thenewaveragebear1983 - I find routine really, really helps, as does starting small but sticking to it. It was my New Year's resolution to go from 1 x 5k weekly to 2 x 5k weekly and I have stuck to it reasonably well so far. I reckon after 6 months the new routine will be properly embedded and I will add a third run.

speak2me · 15/03/2020 12:59

I did one aerobics class a week when I was early 20's, then nothing until about 18months ago. I'm now 34, I run 4 times a week, an average of 20-25miles a week (1x10miles and 3x 3-6miles), plus a Pilates class. My kids are both in primary school and I'm a SAHM, I do my exercise most of the time when they are at school, I know I wouldn't be able to do as much if I worked as well.
