Threadworm hell

New to Mumsnet here so please be nice Smile

I’ve caught the dreaded threadworms from my toddler, first time we’ve had them. We all took ovex one week ago and my ds has cleared up whereas I still have them and can feel them day and night!! What do I do???

I’m doing all the cleaning, washing, hand washing, bathing etc every day. I’m due to take the second dose of ovex in another week, but does this mean it hasn’t worked?

I’m so grossed out and they are keeping me up at night!! Any advice out there from someone who’s been here before?

More ovex

bluemarie87 · 13/03/2020 11:38

Pumpkin seeds worked for me as well as the medication! I too couldn't fully get rid!!

gerbo · 13/03/2020 11:43

You're meant to take a second dose of it anyway, it's either one or two weeks later. I had them as a primary teacher once. Fresh sheets, clean edges of bed, Hoover lots. Best tip- wear clean knickers nightly under your pj bottoms to prevent spread/touching.

Shower morning and evening, then apply some Vaseline / Sudo Cream or similar around your anus. This prevents the female worms laying their eggs which is wha causes the itching. Someone gave me this tip and it really helped.
Clean underwear twice a day.

Thanks for the quick responses!
Will give the pumpkin seeds a try too as luckily I love those anyway!

Do you think I should take another dose of ovex now? Will have been a week since the first. Or wait another week?

Also lots of garlic and raw carrot apparently.

nousernameleft · 13/03/2020 11:53

@DustyWindows thanks, have been showering 4/5 times a day 😬 each time I feel them come out I rush to the bathroom if I can! I know tmi, sorry. Will try the Vaseline tonight too.

Your second dose should be two weeks later normally, I think it is to catch any eggs that may have hatched since the first dose. Tbh if I still had them after a week I would personally do it again today and then again in a week! And yes I had them once when the DC were young too, it’s grim and uncomfortable.

Good luck 😉

They seemed to come to my family every now and again. Ovex did work - follow the instructions - and lots of hand washing and general cleanliness. We should all be used to doing that now!!!

Laserbird16 · 13/03/2020 13:28

I gave DD anti-hisimines to help stop the itching and help her sleep as well as ovex, showers, cream etc

Muminabun · 13/03/2020 13:39

I feel your pain op the cleaning is absolutely relentless. Wash hands as soon as you get into the house, wipe down the door handles etc and keep a scrubbing brush next to the hand wash on all the sinks to make sure under nails are clean. Keep a stock of ovex in the house as primary school seems to be bloody full of worms as well as nurseries and sudocreme helps with the itching.

nousernameleft · 13/03/2020 17:10

Thanks so much for the advice - it really is exhausting and disheartening that they haven’t gone yet.

I’ve just taken another ovex today out of desperation and will be trying all the other suggestions too. Fingers crossed!!

This may out me, and I’m not recommending it but during a particularly troublesome bout of worms, in desperation, my auntie put toilet roll up her bum to stop the worms coming out 🙈

Mlou32 · 13/03/2020 19:05

Stick a clove of garlic up your bum.

DustyWindows · 13/03/2020 19:07

@Mlou32 even better Grin

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 13/03/2020 19:12

I presume you are changing bedding every morning, getting straight in the shower and washing towels after every use? Cut out all sugar, eat lots of grated carrot (google the best diet to combat worms) and while you may not want to go this far, I put a clove of garlic up ‘there’ every night too. Good luck!

nousernameleft · 13/03/2020 20:01

@Mlou32
@PlatoAteMySnozcumber

Haha oh I will give anything a try! Does the garlic actually work?? Do you take it out the next day otherwise what happens to it?? And for how many days?? 🤔

@DustyWindows oh lord, I mean I think I’m almost at the same level of desperation haha

Silvercatowner · 13/03/2020 20:05

I'm afraid when I had them I was so horrified I took a double dose of Ovex and then another double dose 5 days later. It certainly did for the buggers. I'm not recommending overdosing but I'm still here...

PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 13/03/2020 20:34

I did it every night for a week, I just couldn’t bear the thought of worms. It comes out when you go to the toilet so I wasn’t worried about it getting stuck. I had to do everything I could to combat the unwanted visitors!

BBS20 · 18/12/2020 22:08

@nousernameleft Did you manage to get rid of them? If so, What worked for you? Currently going through this and I just can't get rid of them. I am eating so much Garlic and have completely stopped all sugar.

why oh why is there nothing that Kills them off completely? I'm scared I will have them for life.

W1ntersnow · 16/02/2022 20:49

Did you get rid of them? Thinking of taking a second dose or ovex...
