How much Amoxicillin for a 6 year old

Can anyone advise please?

DD2 was 6 this week.

Yesterday she was given a prescription of Amoxicillin.

Two 5ml spoonfuls to be taken three times a day (x2 100ml bottles).

Pharmacist said to take for 1 week and that there would be some left in the second bottle.

It doesn't add up.

10 ml three times a day is 30ml a day.

30 x 7 (days) is 210ml.

So either we have not been given enough medicine, or they have told us the incorrect dosage.

What does the label say?

cliffdiver · 13/03/2020 06:28

Two 5ml spoonfuls to be taken three times a day.

Is the ml the amount of water added to the piercer by any chance? So the finished product ends up more? I can't know for sure without seeing the bottle in front of me but seems a likely explanation if the dosage is correct. You could always phone you surgery and double check that

What strength is it? 125mg/5ml or 250mg/5ml? I think the pharmacist has just incorrectly said you'd have some left over for some reason

cliffdiver · 13/03/2020 06:34

100ml is the reconstituted solution. So we have 200ml in total.

Planning to call pharmacy when they open at 9am.

Sounds fine, usual dose for a 6 year old is 500mg three times a day, so 10ml of the 250mg/5ml solution. They wouldn't usually give you a third bottle just for 1 dose, so you end up having 6 days and 2 doses on the 7th day.

But pharmacist said we have 'too much' and to throw the rest away.

They could of either given you 3x 100ml bottles, but you would of had to throw 90ml away or give you just 200ml. I think they've chosen to give you the 200ml and maybe got slightly confused while counselling.

My dd is 5.5. She's just finished a course of 1 5ml spoon 3 times a day

cliffdiver · 13/03/2020 07:52

Thank you all.

Mads that's what I am thinking.

They may have been thinking it was a 5 day course, which would give you 50mL left over.
