Does anyone know what this item is?

Just wondering if any one knows what this is? I've had it for a few years, I keep the loo rolls in in in my bathroom.
It's some kind of carved wood on the top which comes off and metal (brass?) on the bottom.
It may have come from a church but not sure.

A bed warmer?

antisupermum · 12/03/2020 10:56

Incense burner perhaps? Looks vaguely religious-y

JenNtonic · 12/03/2020 10:58

Does it open ? Is it to hold pot pourri or something ? It's beautiful !

maslinpan · 12/03/2020 11:00

How big is it? Hard to tell from your pic.

Pic with my hand for size😊 The top part comes off.

It's a loo roll holder.

AutumnalLeaves38 · 12/03/2020 14:22

Definitely incense-related, I think.

Its wooden top might prove a fire hazard for lit incense, mind you!

But maybe a Temple used it for just storing massive incense coils?
That might explain its curved shape.

It's rather lovely, whatever.

Does it have any lingering fragrance?

maslinpan · 12/03/2020 15:07

Where did you get hold of it? It's very mysterious, and beautiful too!

Izzabellasasperella · 12/03/2020 19:21

No, no smell to it.
I was given it by someone but I didn't ask them what it was used for, I just really liked it. They had connections to church so that's why I thought it had a religious use.

Could it be a fancy chamber pot for a vicar? For backstage at church in the days before indoor toilets?

myidentitymycrisis · 13/03/2020 08:08

Incense burner?

MysteryFrog · 13/03/2020 08:12

It looks like an incense burner to me too

picklemewalnuts · 13/03/2020 08:21

Does it have any sign of having chains or cords attached to it, like a hanging basket? They swing baskets of incense in some churches.

Doubletrouble99 · 14/03/2020 15:47

It's definitely Chinese, made of rosewood and looks pre WW11. What's it like the other way up?
