Wireless router / new provider question

DamselInTheStress · 11/03/2020 16:11

I'm sure the answer is obvious but I don't know it!

I'm changing internet providers and have received a new wi-fi router from the new provider. The new provider will start in a week or two.

I can just connect it up now and use it with my old provider, right? I don't need to wait? Presumably worst case I'll need to restart it when the provider switches?

The old router is getting a bit flakey, hence I'm keen to ditch it asap.

You should get an e mail from your new provider confirming when your new service will start.

Plug in new router and put new password into the devices that will be using the new router.

Should be straightforward

Should be fine.

A router is a router is a router.

@EngTech yes I know when the new service will start, I just want to use the router already and not create issues for myself. I can't imagine that I will though?

You should be able to just plug it in. There will be a wi-fi signal from the new router.

Enjoy.

Actually some routers don’t play nice with a different provider. So I would switch it over on the day your service changes. Routers are generally similar, but there are sometimes changes in service that your old router may not support.

Well - it will either work or it won't work.

If it doesn't work, plug the old one back in

Then again....

Some good advice here - passwords and settings...
