Mine could, but he writes tons of stories at home.

WyfOfBathe · 10/03/2020 21:59

I was filling whole notebooks with stories at that age (but failing my maths classes).

My sister is 17 now, and would still struggle to write a story that long without a lot of support and prompting. She finds structuring essay answers for science exams difficult as well. She was assessed for dyslexia when younger and found not to have it, but definitely has difficulties with writing tasks.

Not in one sitting. He could in 2-3 sittings.

Not a chance, no way...(dictated and with help around structure no problems). But despite being bright and an avid reader his dyslexia and handwriting would make this unbearable

muchtoosoon · 10/03/2020 22:20

That's approx 1000 words? I think that seems quite a big ask for many 11/12 year olds.

lazylinguist · 10/03/2020 22:25

My current y7 ds could. So could my 14 yo dd when she was that age. They'd both have been pissed off to be expected to write 4 sides as a homework, but they certainly could do it.

Binterested · 10/03/2020 22:29

My DS in y6 couldn’t. Definitely. Boredom. Lack of stamina. Hates writing. Doesn’t have four pages worth of ideas.

NoClarification · 10/03/2020 22:32

DS would write 8 pages, just for fun. DD would struggle with even one.

confusednortherner · 10/03/2020 22:34

Ds Yr7 no chance! A page would be a real struggle here but ds does have irlens and English is a real struggle. Think we'd get half a page at a push, recently did a page but that was him dictating exactly and me typing it.

Think it could be any subject, but they did start with heroes, which was just up his street.
Not sure about any plan or mind map.
I can't get much out if him now, he's shut down about it.
He's so disheartened.
He wrote a lot for chapter 1, it's barely legible but v descriptive and punctuation/grammar is good.

I'm not sure when it has to be in, but even doing it over a week or so is a bit much for him. Planning and organisation is a big struggle
