Could Erythromycin be causing this?

Hi all.

I am on Erythromycin 500mg four times daily for mastitis. I've taken it for two and a half days so far. This morning I woke up feeling awful, being sick and pain sort of under my ribs. Feels like I'm bloated but at the top if that makes sense. The pain has persisted all day. I wondered if it was heartburn but ranitidine isn't touching it.

Anyone have any experience of Erythromycin?

Abdominal pain is one of the side effects.

QuestionableMouse · 09/03/2020 19:33

You also might want to ring your GP in the morning because you should probably change to something else.

NIwanttoknow · 09/03/2020 19:35

Yes it's not uncommon.

Yes. I was hospitalized after serious side effects from erythromycin. Continual vomiting and severe stomach pains.
Honestly thought I was dying. They had to inject me with morphine for the pain.

7vio · 09/03/2020 19:44

Yes. It’s a vile antibiotic. I couldn’t carry on taking it, my body was rejecting it, it made me feel v. nauseous

AvocadoPrime · 09/03/2020 19:47

@Bohomie that sounds awful! Sad

I'm going to contact GP tomorrow. Annoying thing is, because I got booked in with a male GP he wouldnt examine me, just guessed it was mastitis (although no redness or hot bits, just painful lumps). Told me I'd need to go back for examination by a female. I can't go on like this I literally want to curl into a ball and stay there. I've got another dose at 9.30 and I really don't want to take it. It's awful stuff.

It makes both of us feel awful, we refuse it now.

Wheresmycider · 09/03/2020 20:13

Yep, horrible stuff. I am allergic to penicillin so get prescribed this instead. It took 3 weeks to clear mastitis on this, one week at high dose which killed my insides, then 2 weeks at a lower dose which was still not fun.
If they are able to prescribe something else for you then push for it.

Unevenbeard · 09/03/2020 20:15

Yep, always cramps and sickness here as a PP said. I try to ask for an alternative each time

AvocadoPrime · 09/03/2020 20:19

Seems to be commonly a not nice AB then. Ive had a reaction to penicillin, not a bad one but I wanted to scratch my skin off and now they won't prescribe me it anymore.
Hopefully they will prescribe something different.

It made me vomit and had a horrible stomach ache too. Common side effect apparently. Definitely go back to your GP and ask for an alternative.

elizabethrose · 09/03/2020 20:21

It made me very very ill after about two days. Contact your gp and ask them to change, it really is an awful drug.

QuestionableMouse · 09/03/2020 20:23

I would stop taking it. (Ooh doc advised me of this after a reaction to metronidazole. He gave me a different prescription.)

SeigneurLapindeGrantham · 09/03/2020 20:25

I'm allergic to Erythromicin, terrible stomach pains etc. I was under the impression that it was't prescibed anymore.

Nat6999 · 09/03/2020 20:47

Erythromycin made me throw up like something out of a horror film, it was horrible, always about 4 hours after I had taken it. I have refused to be prescribed it ever since.

DaveMinion · 09/03/2020 20:52

I can’t take it as it makes me very sick. Not a true allergy but I get a red wristband in hospital for it. It used to work great for chest infections but my body decided it didn’t like it one day.

SciFiRules · 09/03/2020 20:54

Definitely go back to the docs. However I seen to remember that I had to be really carefully to eat with every dose. Check the instructions on the box as I'm no Doctor but I'm sure it was the same antibiotic.

mineofuselessinformation · 09/03/2020 20:56

It absolutely can cause a reaction.
I can't take any of the antibiotics from this particular 'family'. They make me shed my gut lining. It's happened twice, the second time to the point I thought I was going to die.
If you can hold on until the morning, keep taking them, but phone the GP.

Isadora2007 · 09/03/2020 21:00

Yes. Horrible drug.

@SciFiRules says on the box to eat 2 hours before food. Some people find them easier to manage taking with food. I've noticed no difference either way.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 09/03/2020 21:14

I can't take it either. Made me feel horribly depressed. I'll never take it again.

GinnyWeasleysQuiff · 09/03/2020 21:18

I had an awful reaction to Clarithromycin
Made me feel really ill on top of been Ill anyway!! Wasn't stomach related though

AvocadoPrime · 10/03/2020 15:52

Well I went back to GP, got examined and they said they didn't think it was mastitis. I have now been referred to breast clinic.
