Interviews

I've just had a job interview, I know I haven't got it. I didn't leave with the feeling of optimism I've had in the past with other interviews.

I hate job interviews. Anyone else with me on this? I can't big myself up and hate talking about how good I am!

First, don’t be so sure - I’ve left job interviews certain I performed terribly or that the panel didn’t like me and been called back for a second interview or offered the job. And I had one interview where I left feeling it had gone well and, whilst not expecting to get the job per se, was happy with my performance. Didn’t get the job, asked for feedback, they basically thought I was useless!

You don’t have to big yourself up or talk about how great you are in an interview. Have you practiced using the STAR method? You talk about a Situation where you had a Task; you explain what Action you took to resolve the situation or complete the assignment and what the end Result was. It’s more about providing a focused answer which demonstrates your competency and how well our skills fit the role than telling the world you’re amazing.

I do empathise though, I’m currently interviewing and I hate it.

That's what this interview was like. I was asked a series of situational questions and had to answer with various scenarios I had previously been in. I answered them all ok I think apart from one where I struggled. But I've just left with that feeling of 😕 I don't think I performed so well.
