Mystery Quote, please help!

I love quotations from literature and other works and have a tendency to write down ones I like. Usually with an attribution (or I know the work they are from off by heart) however I have found one written down which doesn’t have where it’s from written with it and although I recognise it I can’t place it. Google didn’t help. It will be from something I have read or watched (not some pointless unattributed internet meme or anything). Please somebody help me!

‘When I reach the end, all I hope is that I will say, "I was alive, I did not turn my back, I tried. That I was happy"’

I have searched a few different areas , book , film , prayer etc and can not find anything , Sorry .
Are you sure you wrote it down correctly ?

Hoping this bump will get the MN hive mind going for you Smile

Thanks @AlCalavicci yes, if I’m usually very precise in writing down quotes. Thanks for having a look. I have a feeling that this may have been a quote directly from speech or a diary entry by, possibly, a WWII survivor it was in response (if my memory serves) them having been hailed as a hero (they were, they had saved countless lives and gone out of their way to aid the escape of Jews etc.) but they said they only did want anyone faced with that kind of prejudice and violence would have done. Hence the ‘i did not turn my back’.

I’d really love to attribute it properly in my notes though. I’m very cross with myself for not writing it down with the quote!

It's from Brideshead Revisited, by Evelyn Waugh.

minniemoll · 08/03/2020 12:08

At least I thought it was, but I can't find it in the book. Maybe it was from the tv series?

soupforbrains · 08/03/2020 19:24

@minniemoll that’s certainly a possibility as I adore that book (DS first and middle names derive from it!) I didn’t immediately click to it but if it’s from an adaptation that would make sense. I’m amazed that the magical internet hasn’t recognised it tbh!

If it helps at all I do know that I wrote it down in March 2011.

It’s honestly driving me insane.
