Karma paid back years of inner smugness

Ok, so I might not be the most consistent or particularly good parent but I always prided myself on my well-behaved hounds. I watched other people with their puppies and adult dogs acting up and internally tssked and congratulated myself on my amazingly obedient doggos. I conveniently pushed aside the fact that Greyhounds generally are calmer and more laidback and usually not a very challenging breed. My family and I have rescued and raised a few Greyhounds from just a few weeks old and I never understood all the cries of how exhausting and destructive puppies can be. My judgy pants were pretty high-waisted.

A few months ago, I agreed to take in another 11-week-old Greyhound puppy. The rescue organisation casually mentioned that this one was a ‘very lively one’ and a little bit mischievous. This got to be the understatement of the century! Basically, they handed us Satan’s Little Helper! She’s already worked out how to push chairs close to where she wants to climb up and steal stuff I placed out of reach. I am missing a great part of my underwear and socks. I only need to turn a nanosecond and my shoes are gone. That brain of hers is ticking non-stop, constantly plotting more mischief. But worse, she’s managed to egg on and encourage my adult greyhounds to join in and now they’ve all turned into wayward born-again teenage rebels. I keep waking up to a mad kiss chase throughout the entire house, led by the demon pupster, often right across the bed with me still in it. They all seem to goad each other to steal anything that isn’t nailed down and started to work as a team with one distracting us, while the others will pinch food. DH and DC find it hysterical. I try not to laugh myself, as it often is quite funny but it undermines any attempt of discipline. The place has turned into a madhouse. Earlier today, I’d dressed them all in their macs, as they aren’t keen on the rain. I got soaked and they mooched about and wanted to get back home pretty sharpish. Then I dried them all off on our return. Moments later, as I had the back door open for a split second, they had all jumped into the pond and were splashing around and then 'investigated' our compost heap and did some gardening. I shouted at them that Battersea Dog's Home wasn’t all that far but they did not take me seriously. Now they all want to sit on top of me. I will never be that smug again! Grin

Haha, he looks ever so handsome though!

ThunderPython · 06/03/2020 22:40

Sadly, some are doped with amphetamines and other nasty drugs

I didn't know this 😢 I think he's been just used as a money machine, as most are I suppose. He's a beautiful soul, it breaks my heart but he's safe now.

Loving the stories and pics.

Had some lovely wine and got the midnight munchies. Given the rampant countersurfing by the resident hound population, especially Satan’s Little Helper, we all need to be vigilant and put any food and leftovers safely away in the fridge (which now has an extra latch) or in the lockable pantry. DH foolishly forgot and left his rather yummy remaining pizza out. I know this because I just caught LHL on the kitchen counter about to break into the box. Obviously, I’ve chased her off. I’m now scoffing it myself, while several soulful eyes stare at me all incredulous and hurt. When it comes to pizza, it’s everyone for themselves! I’m gonna plant the empty box on the floor, near the dog beds and frame the demon pupster. Payback! Grin

Fecking furry bastards! They started barking at me, so had share some of the pizza to pay them off to keep quiet. There’s no honour among thieves!

My next puppy is arriving Thursday. She looks like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth....

Grumpelstilskin · 07/03/2020 22:04

@CMOTDibbler It's probably a demon, I tell thee! Grin Aaaaw, I hope you will have a wonderful time with her.

I was sent one (the foster co-ordinator sends one first before asking if you can take them so you are dragged in), but can't share it here till she is official iyswim. But who knows...
We've had a few months off fostering due to work and other things, so its time to get the crate and camp bed out again. And hope I don't spend too many nights sleeping on said camp bed

Grumpelstilskin · 07/03/2020 22:30

Ah, I get it. It's a privacy thing and makes total sense. Some of the rescues get their fosters to take regular pictures and then the rescue group chooses some to post on their social media with often funny captions to get adopters interested. I hope you have fun and your oldest gets to run around and dig with another puppy Smile

She's with me now, and absolutely lovely. You can't believe what they go through and then cuddle up on the sofa.
I'll take a close up later and post it - my photos go on the rescue FB through the co-ordinator, but until she had been signed over to the rescue she didn't belong to them, and sometimes we have to make the dogs untraceable for their protection.

CMOTDibbler · 12/03/2020 18:24

She even walked nicely on the lead!

I want a nicely behaved pointy hound
Our latest dpuppy in the space of 20 mins has stolen a net of garlic - quickly retrieved. Eaten precious squares of loo roll - obviously hasn't heard anything about stockpiling -
Ran off with a huge Teddy as big as her, sampled a new school shoes and left carrot crumbs all over the sofa.
Being at work was much more restful..

Wish I liked Wine.

I’ll see your SLH poopie and raise you a 10 month old saluki poopie for mischief!

Still a poopie but in a big body! He led our youngest Lurcher astray and reminded him how much fun digging in the garden was. He was one of our foster dogs and went to his new home recently. He was wonderful though 😄😍😍

Loving the updates.

Gorgeous photo, gorgeous story, really put a smile on my face. What a tonic.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 13/03/2020 13:19

@Zaphodsotherhead I love Patterdales, such characters. My Pat/JR cross was incredibly clever (he’s now old and senile, bless him) he used to escape from his travel box, open the fridge, open child gates, push chairs across the floor to jump onto work surfaces... never knew what you were going to come home to 😄

Satan’s Little Helper 😂😂😂 gorgeous!

CMOTDibbler · 18/03/2020 13:57

I've just delivered Angel puppy to her new family (close enough for us to home check them). Sniff. She was the easiest puppy we've ever had - though she demonstrated her normal puppy side by having an exuberant dig in their flower bed within 5 minutes of arrival!
This means we'll undoubtedly get a much harder one next time...

OP, your thread has made me smile, laugh and cry in equal measure..

Brought back a whole heap of memories for me, the tiny innocent face, the tufty fluff, the oldies with their spectacles and the love. Oh the love
