Karma paid back years of inner smugness

Ok, so I might not be the most consistent or particularly good parent but I always prided myself on my well-behaved hounds. I watched other people with their puppies and adult dogs acting up and internally tssked and congratulated myself on my amazingly obedient doggos. I conveniently pushed aside the fact that Greyhounds generally are calmer and more laidback and usually not a very challenging breed. My family and I have rescued and raised a few Greyhounds from just a few weeks old and I never understood all the cries of how exhausting and destructive puppies can be. My judgy pants were pretty high-waisted.

A few months ago, I agreed to take in another 11-week-old Greyhound puppy. The rescue organisation casually mentioned that this one was a ‘very lively one’ and a little bit mischievous. This got to be the understatement of the century! Basically, they handed us Satan’s Little Helper! She’s already worked out how to push chairs close to where she wants to climb up and steal stuff I placed out of reach. I am missing a great part of my underwear and socks. I only need to turn a nanosecond and my shoes are gone. That brain of hers is ticking non-stop, constantly plotting more mischief. But worse, she’s managed to egg on and encourage my adult greyhounds to join in and now they’ve all turned into wayward born-again teenage rebels. I keep waking up to a mad kiss chase throughout the entire house, led by the demon pupster, often right across the bed with me still in it. They all seem to goad each other to steal anything that isn’t nailed down and started to work as a team with one distracting us, while the others will pinch food. DH and DC find it hysterical. I try not to laugh myself, as it often is quite funny but it undermines any attempt of discipline. The place has turned into a madhouse. Earlier today, I’d dressed them all in their macs, as they aren’t keen on the rain. I got soaked and they mooched about and wanted to get back home pretty sharpish. Then I dried them all off on our return. Moments later, as I had the back door open for a split second, they had all jumped into the pond and were splashing around and then 'investigated' our compost heap and did some gardening. I shouted at them that Battersea Dog's Home wasn’t all that far but they did not take me seriously. Now they all want to sit on top of me. I will never be that smug again! Grin

A dpuppy was suggested by the vet as a tonic for other ddogs. We already had her as I knew the end wasn't far - a brain tumour -
1 of them seems subdued but the other 2 seem OK.
Ddog emotions are an absolute minefield...
"Hug me I am new" maybe?

I reeeeeeeally want a greyhound now to be company for my other dog. But I don't think the cat would forgive me Sad

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 06/03/2020 16:13

Lots of greyhounds are cat friendly! Especially younger ones (lots don’t ever race and get dumped at 18 months to two years).

Grumpelstilskin · 06/03/2020 16:38

What a cute picture! @Windyatthebeach We had a sand coloured beauty with black eyeliner too. Our DPuppy also seems to have scant regard for personal space, she always wants to touch us or the other dogs. Sometimes she has even sat on top of one of them Smile

@BendyLikeBeckham There are a number of greyhounds in rescue groups that are 'cat workable'. Ours aren't but DH is very allergic to cats anyway, so sadly no kitties for us.

Aw she's so sweet looking, but that's probably why she fooled you! 😊

I was a smug twat about our dogs before we got our chocolate lab puppy. He literally pulled the rug from under us all and chaos ensued for about 18 months until we finally got the measure of him. We have 4 rescues and none of them are particularly demanding (other than the usual dog stuff) but we're all very aware that we need to be one step ahead of our choc boy at all times!

noodlezoodle · 06/03/2020 16:52

OP please, please start a blog, I would love to read regular updates!

BestestBrownies · 06/03/2020 17:10

Awww... I love this thread.

We have a (mostly) angelic 13yo Westie and are seriously considering adopting him a friend. We’re pretty set on another Westie or dachshund, but now you’ve thrown a greyhound spanner in the works OP! 😂

Shamazing · 06/03/2020 17:17

My friend has a greyhound/lurcher cross and she the loopiest dog I've ever known but my god she's adorable. We often walk together and she just makes you happy by looking at her, she's such a comedy dog.

pullingmyhairout2 · 06/03/2020 17:23

This made me roar with laughter 😂. We have a whippet x greyhound and her nickname was Satan's little helper when she was a pup (along with lots of other names 😂). Bought back many memories!

Grumpelstilskin · 06/03/2020 18:00

Surely, there cannot be more of the little demons out there! Grin

In spite of SLH, I would urge anyone to consider getting a greyhound or greyhound mix, i.e. Lurcher. They just charm you in ways you cannot begin to imagine and are such great company. Aside from really young pupsters, they are the laziest and most laid-back dogs you can get. They usually don't require more than a couple of short walks. Once they had a few mad moments of zooming around, they sleep all day. They are not called 45 miles an hour couch potatoes for nothing. Even SLH is still relatively lazy compared to other puppies. Smile

The OP had me howling with laughter! not RTFT yet.

CMOTDibbler · 06/03/2020 18:07

I foster lurcher puppies. My own two lurchers are pretty good normally, but the 5 year old absolutely adores having pups around and teaches them to do grass track racing in the garden - you can actually see the track. And digging. He loves to dig with them. And bounce off the sofas. None of this happens without a puppy around. But even then, we have had some little friends who he gazes on in horror at! One whippety little girl actually did bounce off the walls :-) And then some of them are just so sedate - we had one who was rescued in terrible circumstances walked in the house, curled up on the sofa, walked like a dream on her lead from the first time she saw one, slept all night, and rang the dog bells to go out from the second day with us perfectly. Puppies are gorgeous little gits!

Luunaa · 06/03/2020 18:13

This had me laughing so hard- OP, please keep commenting as you have a fantastic writing style!

We had a greyhound for 3 lovely days last year before I suffered a catastrophic allergic reaction- no exaggeration- and had to return her to the kennels. I still cry often about how sad I am about it and how much we loved her, in those 3 days. Greyhounds are a beautiful unique animal.

Harakeke · 06/03/2020 18:16

I love the thought of the adult greyhounds reliving their youth by jumping on beds with the new pup - who is gorgeous by the way.

ThunderPython · 06/03/2020 18:18

My parent's retired greyhound. He sleeps, he ears, he farts.

He has 2 beds in the living room, along with the sofa or the "throne" (IKEA wing back chair) as well as his cage in the kitchen which is lovingly padded with several sleeping bags and a duvet. He also has a super king bed and 2 single beds upstairs.

He makes full use of all.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/03/2020 18:55

"Sleep. Eat. Fart"

Mmm. There's a book in there somewhere, Python Grin

Your second picture is delightful, too Windy. The owners of the fish shop (tropical fish - not deep-fried-in-batter fish) has a lovely little blue whippet bitch that I always make a fuss of - she's very old. We went today and the racket from behind the counter! They've got a darling little sandy puppy ( a boy - what a twist!) as well. He's lovely!

I was filled with longing . . . I've been trying to persuade Mr Schaden to let me have a terrier (my very favourites) or a nice little whippet for some time now, but he is obdurate - three mad spaniels is two more than he'd like if the truth be known (though he loves them to bits).

There was a gorgeous litter of beddy x whippets for sale and I tried turning the screws ("Look - two dogs in one! Terrier AND whippet!") but it didn't work . . . Sad.

I know he's right - I can barely cope with these three crackers - and adding an extra dog to any mix can really upset the applecart if you aren't careful . . . but I can dream can't I?

pullingmyhairout2 · 06/03/2020 19:23

Here is my Satan's little helper 😂😂. And its true, they may be the naughtiest puppys out there but they soon turn into lazy beings. Wouldnt be without her now.

@CMOTDibbler Awww bless your boy! The bouncing of the wall reminds me of the video of a Greyhound x going mental on a trampoline. I’ve fostered some Greyhounds. Well, tried to, which is why at one point we were up to 7 Greyhounds and currently have 5. This is it. For now. Well, for a while.

@Luunaa Oh how sad for you all! How unfortunate and unusual, as usually they are the best kind of dogs for those with allergies, as they have no dander.

@ThunderPython Yep, we Greyhound folk are a tad indulgent. DH’s mum has knitted sweaters for all of her ‘grandkids’, especially the hound variety and they probably have more coats than the DC Grin

"Sleep. Eat. Fart" Mmm. There's a book in there somewhere I am pretty sure I’ve seen a movie like that Grin

@pullingmyhairout2 I am sure there are some hormones that make us forget what true demons they were as puppies and take in another SLH.

Chesntoots · 06/03/2020 19:44

Greyhounds are just beautiful. I would love one but I work long and stupid hours, and I've also heard that they are not good with cats so probably not a good idea.

I used to work with someone who rescued them after racing. He started with one and then...you can imagine the rest!

ThunderPython · 06/03/2020 19:46

Hahaha @SchadenfreudePersonified, I'd buy that book!

What I love about our (he's my parent's dog but he's my dog-brother... Obvs slightly unhinged) boy is that he is an ex racer and ess very successful so he's been worked very hard. He lived in kennels, he didn't know the luxurious comfort and kindness that he does now. He's only 6 but looks so old and has bald patches and a newly discovered kidney problem Sad

We doubt he had a typical puppyhood. He didn't know how to play then about 6 months in he suddenly (with the help of my dog) discovered the fun of throwing toys - and mums draught excluder - around the room with gay abandon Grin

Our boy is truly adored, even with his stinky trumps, and I can't help but feel that he knows exactly how lucky he is - a year in and he looks so content.

His kidney condition means he won't live to a great old age, but he'll live in comfort and will know love.

CMOTDibbler · 06/03/2020 19:52

We've managed to stick with our own two (though a lovely little blue girl was a close thing, and one black girl who came back 3 times through no fault of her own we said would stay if it happened again). We do have 3 cats (all mad, and the sort that the Cats Protection see us coming and start rubbing their hands in glee to rehome some hard cats) and 4 chickens (who terrorise ddog1) though.

Ddog1 who is a saluki/greyhound has many, many coats. The latest is a long legged quilted one that zips along the back. This makes him very happy. His newest indoor jumper has dinosaur spikes Grin

Luunaa · 06/03/2020 20:01

I know. Everyone says that! I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything before.

Gotaprettypup · 06/03/2020 20:12

Love your post OP, brilliantly written. Not a greyhound here but love all dogs so it is fun reading about Grumpelpup.

Grumpelstilskin · 06/03/2020 20:32

@Chesntoots Yep, with Greyhounds it’s often said it’s like opening a tube of Pringles, you can’t just have one. You can get cat workable Greyhounds but I understand that it’s not an option when you work long hours.

@Windyatthebeach They are adorable! Mine aren’t quite so compactly arranged and usually require a 3 seater. Each. Grin

@ThunderPython Well, I hope your ‘brother’ gets to have as many happy years as possible. Sadly, some are doped with amphetamines and other nasty drugs. One of ours lived to 17 though and my friend’s Greyhound went to nearly 16. Despite their large size, they can actually have a decent life expectancy. Maybe they are part tortoise when they do not move for hours Grin

@CMOTDibbler DH and I are suckers and just fell in love with each hound that we took in. Quite a few of my Greyhound mad friends bought amazing knitted woolly snoods with gremlin ears. There is someone knitting them to raise money for greyhound charities. Her Greyhound boy models them more or less voluntarily and his less than impressed expression as the photoshoots go on are hysterical. Grin
