I’m 7 months pregnant, my anxiety is increasing daily about a multitude of things.

I don’t have any books left to read and anywhere I go online is doom and gloom

I used to like the shopaholic books when I was much younger and I read the odd Marian Keyes.

Is there something new that you would heartily recommend someone who just needs something to take their mind off the real world for the next few weeks at least?

Three Men in a Boat , Jerome K Jerome. It’s my favourite book and always makes me laugh. I have a pukka first edition. Cost me a small fortune.

Annebronte agree, I love Angela Thirkell, she's so underrated I think.

I agree with PPs' suggestions of James Herriot and Bill Bryson, love both of them too. I usually read children's books or PG Wodehouse when I need to feel better about everything, usually works well!

I love Sophie Kinsella!

I was going to mention Cold Comfort Farm but someone beat me to it. Also, I don't know if anyone can remember this but there was a TV Adaption of this probably around 1994/1995. It starred Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry , Rufus Sewell and I think Kate Beckinsale. It was really good as far as i can remember.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit Sophie Kinsella is my go to easy, funny read.

I like Undomesticated Goddess best.

I was also going to say Miss Pettigrew, but someone has beaten me to it - or anything by Dorothy Whipple.

katy1213 · 06/03/2020 00:44

Oh, and Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet books - from memory, I think there's five of them, so if you enjoy them, you can escape for a good long read!

The Agatha Raisin books are easy light reading, also Hamish Macbeth by the same author.

katy1213 · 06/03/2020 00:46

And Diary of a Nobody! Nothing like Pooter to make you giggle.

RainbowMum11 · 06/03/2020 00:48

Anything by Jane Green would probably fit the bill too.

MyfanwyMontez · 06/03/2020 00:48

Starter for 10 by David Nicholls is quite funny and easygoing.

@AlCalavicci he's written something 20 books in the series now. All very gentle, funny, wise and engaging. Like a warm bath. I just finished reading Cold Comfort Farm and highly recommend as a comfort book. Crazy Rich Asians series - pure escapism, I loved them and laughed out loud, but avoid dreadful film.
