Help me find this film from childhood

I have this memory of watching a film with my mum one afternoon when I was off sick from school. This is what I can remember: some people moved into a haunted house , there were a number of different ghosts in it, the very end credits are where the family are driving off in an old fashioned car and you see all the ghosts sitting on the back, going with them. In my mind, they waved at the camera but this may be a false memory. I think it was black and white - it was definitely an old style film- think 'The Ghost and Mrs Muir' in terms of the way it looked- and one of the ghosts was an older man, silly and comedic. I have searched Google and just cannot find it- a couple of weeks ago I read either a thread on here or an online article about old family ghost films and I thought I had bookmarked it to go through them all and see if any of them were my film- but I can't find the bookmark! Any one out there know what I am talking about? I'd love to watch it again as it is one of my best memories of me and my lovely late Mum.

The Ghosts of Motley Hall? (Really reaching here)

Can you remember any of the actors? What accent they spoke in? Where this was based? Name of the old house? Names of any of the characters?

I too am very invested in this 😀 The only TV show I can think of is Rentaghost. If it’s a film, could it be a Laurel and Hardy one?

Horehound · 06/03/2020 10:15

It sounds really like Caspar!!

BreatheAndFocus Think it may have been American (why I keep returning to Abbot and Costello) or suppose it could have been old posh English (as a kid, I knew the voices weren't 'normal' if you see what I mean

Definitely not Casper- or Rentaghost- the current BBC series 'Ghosts' is similar in that there were a varying set of ghosts in the house

Wasn’t Haunted Mansion a remake of an old movie though?

Disney isn’t it?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/03/2020 11:01

No, it's a film of the ride I think- not an old film remade

Ah ok I knew there was something. Sorry!!

crapette · 06/03/2020 12:47

Beverly Hillbillies?

crochetmonkey74 · 06/03/2020 13:01

no, that's one of the (I have since found out) very common films where the haunting turns out to be gangsters/ spies hiding and pretending to be ghosts!

I keep thinking of Stardust but that’s too recent.

Santasunhelpfulhelper · 06/03/2020 13:22

Could the end scene been the ghosts of two women sat on a fence and the man is driving off in his old fashioned car (he was married to both of the women when they were each alive)
He crashes his car and ends up sitting in the fence with them both. It’s a comedy. The first dead wife haunts the second wife then she dies too.

crochetmonkey74 · 06/03/2020 13:23

Yeah, I am 45 - and I was watching around middle school age (11 ish or slightly younger) so this would have been a film shown in the afternoon in early 1980s - and it was an 'old' film then

Sorry, just googled it and apparently it was Blithe Spirt which has already been suggested.

crochetmonkey74 · 06/03/2020 14:16

No definitely not Blithe Spirit- the ending is not right and I know the play and all the film versions very well - definitely not any version of that

The Ghosts of Motley hall used to be on in the afternoons around 1978+.

TinkerPony · 06/03/2020 14:27

Santasunhelpfulhelper
That seem similar to 'Death become Hers' but in the opposite way.

crochetmonkey74 · 06/03/2020 14:38

Not Motley Hall- definitely an older film/ tv

Topper returns?

Ok - been racking my brains but to no avail. Sorry.

I’m dying to know now though! Maybe you could tweet a film critic like Mark Kermode?
