Does anyone subscribe to Audible audio books?

How do you find it? Is the range of books good, and do you get to keep downloads or do they expire?

Bloody typos

@LooseleafTea previous post was for you.

Pennina · 05/03/2020 20:34

Another fan! I really couldn't be without it. I've been a subscriber for over 5 years, worth every penny!

CodenameVillanelle · 05/03/2020 20:39

@LooseleafTea if you want to delete them from the app, just swipe on the book and it will go. If you want to return them for another credit, go to the audible site and go to my account and purchase history.

Oh wow thank you for the lovely help - so appreciate it as it’s been annoying me and I’d given up . I will try now

MapMySleighRide · 05/03/2020 20:50

Love audible, the podcasts are good as well as the books.

Please dont return a book unless you actually had a problem with it, as a pp said it will affect the already small income of the authors and publishers from audio publishing. It is akin to wearing a dress out then returning it with there being no fault really

LooseleafTea · 05/03/2020 20:51

It really won’t let me swipe. And I don’t get the 3 dots option either . I’m on an iPhone if that’s an issue?

LooseleafTea · 05/03/2020 20:51

I don’t want to return any, just want to delete lots I won’t listen to again as want a tidier library !

LooseleafTea · 05/03/2020 20:53

I just managed a swipe but it leaves the book there and just delete the content from device rather than get rid of it

I've just discovered my library has a free audiobook service called borrow box. It's good, but you sometimes to wait for a book to be available.

Inextremis · 05/03/2020 21:31

I use Audible to help with my insomnia (or I did, I am no longer suffering!). The very best audiobook for that was 'This Audiobook Will Put You to Sleep', although on first listen it had me literally speechless with laughter (my friend was staying overnight at the time, we were listening together). It has a narrator with the most soporific, but strangely pleasant, voice, and it covers a wide variety of very boring topics :)

Nearly all my audiobooks are non-fiction - I find them really helpful for sleep. Listening to novels in bed doesn't work for me, because I fall asleep before the end of a chapter, and the book carries on, not knowing I'm asleep, so the next night I can't remember where I got to and it's difficult to rewind to the right spot. Non-fiction is far more forgiving when that happens!

SisyphusDad · 05/03/2020 21:32

One thing I've found recently that if you buy the Kindle book, you are often 'offered the chance' to buy the Audible version as well, and the combined cost can be cheaper than the Audible book on its own.

SisyphusDad · 05/03/2020 21:35

Sorry Blush. Just seen that someone's already suggested this.

Flummingbird · 05/03/2020 21:35

If you read a lot, kindle unlimited works like a library, you can have 10 books at a time, and if you look you can find ones with the free audible option, so £8 a month for as many to read and listen to as you like, but a much limited selection. Worth it for a few months though!!

AlCalavicci · 05/03/2020 22:38

@Toddlerteaplease
its ok I get them looks when I am listening to Cabin Pressure , Old Harrys Game or Revolting People Grin Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2020 23:25

I find The Sherlock Holmes stories read by Derek Jacobi, my go to for insomnia. I know them off by heart so easy to fall asleep too.

crankysaurus · 06/03/2020 07:07

He always helped me nod off watching In The Night Garden so that makes sense.

AlCalavicci · 06/03/2020 23:31

oooh I like Derek Jacobi in Cadfale , so I would look out for any books narrated by him .

AlCalavicci · 07/03/2020 11:42

Ok , I have now got the app and downloaded my 1st book ( Notes by BB )
but can someone explain how the credits work , how do I buy them ? how much are they ?

1066vegan · 07/03/2020 20:27

@AlCalavicci
There's a menu icon in the top left corner of the home page.

From there you can go to the store. In the store, you can either buy credits or click on a book and buy it with a credit card that you've linked to Audible.

Alternatively, from the menu you can click on "my account". I pay £7.99 a month. For that I get one credit a month which buys 1 book.

I usually shortlist a few that I'd like books and then go for one that looks the best value eg longest (hours not pages) or well over £7.99.

There are regular sales and offers on both credits and books.

When choosing a book, if it's a narrator that you haven't tried before then always click on the play option to hear a sample. It's a good idea to look at the reviews as well. I almost bought a book today (narrator I like, book looked good) but the first couple of reviews said that it had been abridged and abridged badly which saved me wasting my time on it.

crankysaurus · 08/03/2020 06:45

I'm starting to find I much prefer some reading styles (going by the samples). I'm used to listening to the radio so radio shows are good but am struggling with someone just reading the book I've got with the trial credit. Does anyone find this? Do you just get used to it?

My local library has a digital service where you can borrow ebooks and audible books for free. It's brilliant and doesn't cost a thing. Worth seeing if yours does something similar?

1066vegan · 08/03/2020 07:37

@crankysaurus I really like being read to so enjoy it but it does depend on the narrator.

If you try a few different narrators and find somebody just reading a book a bit boring for you then look for bbc dramatisations of books instead. There are loads available in lots of different genres. I've got some classics (eg Trollope, Elizabeth Gaskell and Austen), Charles Parris (crime comedies with Bill Nigh) and Falco (crime stories set in Ancient Rome starring Anton Lesser).

Helenluvsrob · 08/03/2020 07:46

Remember you can share accounts too.

There are all 5 of us on mine.

The kids are grown up and it’s great to see them listening to thing though if you are all listening to the same book it’s interesting remembering to not let it go to “ furthest read “

I’ve also bought set English texts for youngests uni studies.

PayingGuests · 08/03/2020 13:26

How do you share it? My sister has an Alexa on my account will she beable to use it even though miles away?
