Does anyone subscribe to Audible audio books?

How do you find it? Is the range of books good, and do you get to keep downloads or do they expire?

Me, I have a two book subscription and have listened to books I wouldn't read necessarily. I really enjoy it, then DS found out about it and used all my credits Grin.

I do, but I only use it for Spanish learning (currently listening to Harry Potter books im Spanish), because I really don't like listening to English audiobooks, as I prefer to read. I love the fact that you can slow down the speed.

BabyMoonPie · 04/03/2020 20:50

I second trying your local library. The selection won't be as wide or current as Audible but it will let you see if he likes listening to books and you could sign up to a subscription if he does and wants more choice

We've got a few through the library, especially ordering from other libraries in the city, for all the Harry Potter and a few others. Seem too have exhausted that though but this looks like it has quite a range.

For plugging other sources, we've found Open Culture too, which has quite a few audio books

I have poor eyesight and struggle to read small print in books, I find audible perfect.

Luunaa · 04/03/2020 22:06

Hello. I've used audible for years and years without any problems and have built up an extensive library. However, I read a tip on here that's changed things for me recently-

If you buy the kindle version of a book, you can quite often THEN buy the audio version for very cheap- usually £3.49. For example:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07RLP2LNV/ref=series_rw_dp_sw?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

£3.99 for the book, £3.49 for the audio.

This gives you double the benefit- you get the kindle book AND the audible version for the same price as 1 audible credit. And brilliantly, you can switch between both- I often read a chapter on my kindle at night, then turn on audible in the car and it picks up from where I've left off! So clever.

crankysaurus · 04/03/2020 22:09

Ooh, that's a very good top tip, I like that you can switch between them too.

DH subscribes to it, he is a postman and listens to audiobooks while out on his walk. He really likes it as he’s not a big reader (in fact, I’ve never known him to read a novel in the eight years we’ve been together!) but he enjoys listening to it.

I'm.a fairly recent convert. I started a new job last summer with a longer commute and did a free trial of Audible. I love it. I usually listen to non fiction and have got through a lot of political memoirs and also travel books.

I do sometimes do the Kindle book and audio version and switch between the two.
Last weekend there was a "buy 2 books for 1 credit" deal, they do those quite often. I have a 1-credit a month deal and thats fine.

AlCalavicci · 04/03/2020 22:24

I have been thinking about getting this for a while , it sounds good,
If I down load the app on my lap top and phone will audibooks keep a track of both so I can switch between both devices ?

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 04/03/2020 22:28

There’s also the option of paying for either 12 or 24 credits up front so you can download all your books at once and just pay annually. Think it works out a little cheaper per credit than the rolling monthly one.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 04/03/2020 22:29

Yes it tracks last playback position between devices. It normally says “last known playback position was x, do you want to go there or start at beginning?

WishThisWasLangClegGin · 04/03/2020 22:41

Yes it's easy to switch between devices.

I listen via my phone mostly, but use the Amazon Echo in the kitchen when cooking. It's lovely just be able to say "Alexa, read Notes from a Small island"

AlCalavicci · 04/03/2020 22:42

@Mycat

Thanks thats good to know , i have found that a traditional paper book mark shoved in my phone just does not do the job Grin

AlCalavicci · 04/03/2020 22:45

@WishThisWasLangClegGin,

I have just been looking at Bill Bryson's Notes, I have read it before but it is worth another read , I also want his The Body book

PolloDePrimavera · 04/03/2020 22:47

Brilliant, helps me sleep. I stock up when I can on the daily deals.

1066vegan · 04/03/2020 22:54

Another fan here. They've got a huge range and I like that once you have bought a book, that book is yours for ever, even if you cancel your subscription.

Readyme · 04/03/2020 22:59

I would sooner cancel my Netflix subscription before my audible. It also has lots of high quality podcasts and author interviews included in your membership.

BillywilliamV · 04/03/2020 23:03

Love it, love it, love it!

TeeniefaeTroon · 05/03/2020 00:55

@CodenameVillanelle thank you, two minutes after I read your post I 'cancelled' and now have it half price for 3 months.

I do love it though. Before I had my son 7 years ago I was on sleeping tablets every night to help me sleep. I gave them up when I was pregnant and now use audiobooks. I set the 30 minute timer but never make it that long before I'm sound asleep.

couchlover · 05/03/2020 10:55

I didn't like it and found the subscription expensive- if you stop subscribing you loose your books - well I did anyway.

I think buying individual books you wanted is different and I know some people love that. I didn't really enjoy audible books, one I listened to was the 3rd book of a series and I didn't like how the reader made the characters sound.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2020 11:23

@AlCalavicci be careful with Bill Bryson. Laughing out loud when you are walking down the street makes you look a bit odd!

Kaykay066 · 05/03/2020 16:31

My sister suggested audible for my kids, I use the echo for guided mediation for my 8 year old and they both like their books. My sisters son is dyslexic so ideal for him, he loves stories but frustrated not being able to read what he wants yet,

LooseleafTea · 05/03/2020 16:35

Does anyone know how to get rid of books from your library that you don’t want to listen to again? I just want to tidy it but they keep popping back

1066vegan · 05/03/2020 20:32

@LooseleatTea If you go to the library, there's a menu icon (3 dots) in the top right corner. One of the options is to filter books. If you click on that, there's an option to hide books that you've read. I haven't found a way to hide specific titles.
