Just checked out Swizzels history, no mention of dib dabs? Totally confused. Feel like I am in an episode of Black Mirror Grin

MrsJoshNavidi · 03/03/2020 22:42

I found this

A Dib Dab is a package of sherbet powder sold with a lollipop. You lick the lollipop, dip it in the powder and use that to carry it to the mouth. The brand called Dip Dabs is made by Barrat; the brand called Dib Dab is made by Swizzels Matlow. See Barrat Sherbet Fountains for information on the Barrat company

I remember it as dib dab but it is more likely that I am misremembering than the universe is conspiring against me.

@ChaosTrulyReigns we are both well thank you! And I definitely remember (Barretts) Dip-dabs in the 70s. I even remember people calling them dib-dabs by mistake (as well as people writing sherbert instead of sherbet)! Grin

Saisong wins the thread with that fascinating post.

I've now started wandering down a rabbit hole of language rules that I didn't know that I knew. www.bbc.com/culture/story/20160908-the-language-rules-we-know-but-dont-know-we-know

The rule goes thus "If there are three words then the order has to go I, A, O. If there are two words then the first is I and the second is either A or O.”

I thought it was because the "d" in "dabs" is voiced, so, when you pronounce it, the "p"' from "dip" becomes voiced as well because the voicing spreads. Like the way the word "titbit" has become "tidbit' over here in North America.

Or something. I know we have actual linguists on MN , and not just people who are struggling to remember phonology class from 25+ years ago.

Definitely a candidate for The Mandela Effect.
