Is this a scam?

Just received a text saying

Hi £50 received with thanks. Cheers mate.

I'm pretty sure I haven't paid anyone £50 lately. In fact I don't do internet banking, DH transfers money if I need to pay someone something by bank transfer so is this some new kind of scam whereby I reply and …. something happens?

Google the number, see if anything comes up.

dementedpixie · 03/03/2020 17:41

I'd probably ignore it. They probably want you to reply and then spam you with more texts

nameychange · 03/03/2020 17:41

I’d imagine so. I guess they expect you to say but I didn’t send you £50. They then reply send me your bank details and I’ll return it to you. Then they gave you bank details.

I think they may have just got the wrong number. Though if they used your name? Whatever block it and don't reply!

Waspnest · 03/03/2020 17:43

Have googled it and nothing showed up.

Thanks for the replies, I hate people who do this, it's unsettling.

It could be a scam and someone is trying to get your bank details. Ignore it, and block the number.

StillDisappointed · 03/03/2020 18:01

Add the number to your phone and see if anything comes up on WhatsApp?

If not, it's most likely a scam so block and ignore.

StillDisappointed · 03/03/2020 18:01

Check the number of Facebook too.

Waspnest · 03/03/2020 18:15

Nothing on Facebook either.

If you haven’t actually given them £50 then you have nothing to worry about

mnthrowaway202020 · 03/03/2020 18:25

It doesn’t seem like a well known scam but it’s probably just money laundering

EG
You reply
They promise they’ll give you the money back
You give them your account no & sort code
They “accidentally” transfer too much money to you, say £150
They ask you to send the excess £100 to another bank account
Your bank account gets investigated and closed for bank fraud etc etc

StarlightLady · 03/03/2020 19:26

Just ignore and block.
