Just why?

Why do people share absolutely any old nonsense on Facebook. This is the latest one I’ve seen on several feeds:

  • SERIOUS EXCELLENT ADVICE by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases. Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY. Take a few sips of water every 15 mins at least. WHY? Even if the virus gets into your mouth...drinking water or other liquids will WASH them down through your oesophagus and into the stomach. Once there in tummy...your stomach ACID will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly...the virus can enter your windpipes and into the LUNGS. That's very dangerous. Pls send and share with family, friends and everyone about this !ll*

Wtaf? I did say to one person that it is untrue and the response was ‘oh there is so much conflicting advice who knows what to believe!’ No, the advice from WHO hasn’t changed!

Someone on my Facebook posted some utter shite the other day about drinking warm water and NOT iced water because the virus can’t survive above 27degrees, not sure how it’s surviving in the human body then Hmm

iklboo · 03/03/2020 17:23

Yes I've read the 'it dies in the sun'. Vampire Virus. Okey dokey then....

Likethebattle · 03/03/2020 18:09

Its the same people who share ‘asylum seekers get diamond encrusted £10 notes and live on £600 per week. Pensioners get 30pence a month, share if you think it’s a disgrace!’ I actually sent a screen shot of the fu ds asylum seekers do get and asked ‘in all seriousness do you think these people are in it for a bedside and £36 a week. They are obviously desperate!’

OMG this reminds me of when I was trying to lose weight and my (now ex) MIL advised me to drink neat lemon juice, because 'it dissolves your fat'. Grin

lljkk · 03/03/2020 18:27

I find that one funny, OP.
Oh well, at least it isn't directly harmful.
Problem is that you're so busy keeping mouth moist that you might forget to wash your hands.
All those extra trips to the public lav, too, lovely place to leave one's germs.
Sunlight does kill a lot of viruses. Summer is what seemed to stop SARS1.

Mollypolly2610 · 03/03/2020 18:32

Someone I know posted that ALCOHOL kills the virus so most of us should be ok as long as we keep swigging the gin!

user1423578854468 · 03/03/2020 18:36

It does kind of make you wonder how the human race lasted this long.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 03/03/2020 18:36

I’m happy to get behind that one,

GingerGingerGingerGinger · 03/03/2020 18:47

Well, if we all take a mouthful of gin every 15 minutes....will that keep us moist enough?

Drogonssmile · 03/03/2020 18:49

My MIL's sister shared this. Made me chuckle!

My thoughts exactly. If people are unable to basic research (get on to the WHO website) on a relatively simple topic (how not to get COVID-19), how the actual fuck do they navigate, analyse, and digest complex political issues around an election.... Hmm

Or a referendum... Oh, wait Grin

Posts like this can be a form of click-harvesting: posts deliberately created to gain a lot of shares and/or feedback. They may be deliberately wrong so that people feel obliged to interact with them in order to debunk them,.Feedback promotes the posts up peoples' Facebook newsfeeds so they get shown to more people. Once they have a high enough ranking then they can either be sold on and swapped over to advertising, or edited to include malware. I think even replying to them to say ' no, this is nonsense' will count as feedback and promote them.

The best thing to do is to report the posts but not to respond to them directly.

Rosecatter · 03/03/2020 19:08

That water theory is doing the rounds. There are also people insisting that if we all just get some fresh air then we will be fine.
If only it was that simple...

YouJustDoYou · 03/03/2020 19:10

That's not "Japanese advice"

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/03/2020 19:25

I read one today as well.

It said it starts with a dry cough. If it starts with anything else then ITS NOT THE CORONAVIRUS

Oh yeah? What if they had a cold before they caught the virus?
Not to mention the fact that people present differently in any illness.

Twats.

isabellerossignol · 03/03/2020 19:30

Has anyone suggested onions yet on Facebook? That's only a matter of time surely.

Every winter, some dimwit on my timeline shares some crap about how you cut an onion in half and put it in the corner of the room, it absorbs viruses from the air, so you don't catch cold or flu. And, even better, their evidence is that this is what people used hundreds of years ago during plague outbreaks. Oh well, I'll definitely do that then, because it really helped stop the black death in its tracks. Hmm

Kanga83 · 03/03/2020 19:31

It's like people avoiding Corona Beer thinking it can carry coronavirus. I don't understand how people can vote and reproduce with views like this.

This is FIL's go to 'cure'. Hmm

Likethebattle · 04/03/2020 00:00

Oh god yeah the onion one! Also don’t eat an onion that’s been left after being cut as it’ll have so much bacteria you’ll die.
