Bristol Post names and shames disgusting online trolls

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 02/03/2020 19:23

I say well done - these are grown, adult men who knew full well what they were doing; and their online trolling has come back to bite them on the bum. Maybe it will shame them into changing their behaviour in future.

I found several of them on FB (their names + "Bristol" seem to be prominent in the search!). They seem to have women and girls in their lives, plus several are fathers too. The article especially comments on one man who had set his profile picture with a "Be Kind" frame!

Communist, I think you might benefit from reading up about social identity theory and the psychology behind the salience of identities.

Gilead · 03/03/2020 11:20

@Validerama. Out of order comment on Greta Thunberg. Hmm

Patroclus · 03/03/2020 12:29

Well, you may be ashkenazi jewish, but if you cant understand the scientific, cultural and historical fact that they are just as much a race and ethnic group as others then it cant have given you any advnatage in understanding this stuff. As such its no suprise you use invented twitter terms in the place of actual well defined and established definitions.

I was impressed to see this at the time, but thinking about where it could go makes me uneasy. For example, women get death threats and rape threats for saying things online like "I'm a lesbian" or "I like a nice cup of tea". All it takes is the publishing of such comments to a wide audience for the hatred to turn on them regardless of how "bad" what they said was.
The papers need to be 100% sure that the people trolling are actually posting abusive stuff and not just to publish e.g. someone saying they like tea because someone else found that "problematic".

Obviously these men fit that criterion but I'd be wary of a feature like this regularly starting pile-ons.

Patroclus · 03/03/2020 14:05

If these people put this stuff online, they need to be prepared for it going as public as this, otherwise- they shouldnt publish stuff online to a potential audience of billions.

Its like somebody hurling crude abuse at a child down a side street then getting upset because a large group of people overheard it in the mainstreet,

Vallderama · 03/03/2020 14:15

Not really. I agree it's up to them to face the consequences but the normal consequence is someone thinking "prick", maybe if they've got a lot of time on their hands having a look at the profile, then getting on with their day. What this "news"paper has done is used its position to draw attention to them over and above that, by implying that the shit they put on Facebook is newsworthy, and by tacitly inviting public condemnation.

chomalungma · 03/03/2020 15:15

I hope they have the right people. Easy to impersonate someone.

Patroclus · 03/03/2020 15:30

Yes choma, somebody could be copying facebook profiles of random, boring midle aged men and running a campaign in the slim, tiny hope that they get into the Bristol Post. Why exactly?

Vallderama but you dont get to decide how people act to or the 'consquences' of your words. Its part of the deal of living in the real world.

humsnet · 03/03/2020 15:53

”You cannot be racist to a white person.”

Posted up above and absolutely bollocks. You’ve clearly never spent time in Asia where the ‘n’ word equivalent for white folk translates as “shit-covered pig.” Gammon is mild by comparison.

humsnet · 03/03/2020 15:58

In India they had to introduce a brunette Barbie because Indian children were so repulsed by blonde Barbie.

humsnet · 03/03/2020 16:05

When my Indian grandmother first met my sandy-haired English husband, she couldn’t look him in the eye because his “bald eyelids” (actually blonde eyelashes) made her feel physically sickSad.

Sorry for the thread hijack OP, but wanted to dispel the PP’s ignorance/misplaced sense of racial superiority Wink.

Gilead · 03/03/2020 16:12

@Vallderama, again, I have reported your post. Please learn something about ASCs before posting again. Anxieties we suffer are usually created by others. We are not neurotic just because we have a diagnosis. Angry

Vallderama · 03/03/2020 20:19

@popehilarious I agree. If there are any repercussions for any of these guys I hope they claim damages from the paper. Plus, it's such a disengenuous position: "ooh look, debate is heated but we're not adding to the heat, oh no, we're just publishing names and pictures in our paper". People are full of shit online. Have you seen the crap that people put on Facebook about trump? Who is, I will concede, a monumental prick and way out of thunbergs league in regard to bellendery but no one's collating the responses and calling it news.

puffmais · 04/03/2020 00:51

Hi CommunistLegoBloc

I have namechanged. I was on this thread witing as GuineaSomethingGood yesterday. I have thought a lot about what you said. Firstly, apologies for not making it clear that I am Jewish in terms of some ancestry only and not a true practicing (or even full blood) Jew. I also am beginnign to see you have a point- it is very different not to be living a Jewish lifestyle, and you are right- I do not really have personal experience of prejudice on ethnic grounds. I do apologise I did not make that clear. I have looed at the links you shared and about the Black Lives Matter campaign and it is really interesting stuff- thanks for helping me learn a little about the BAME perspective of things. I never really discuss race with my BAME friends so never really saw it from their point of view.

It is bizarre that some whites had an issue with #BlackLivesMatter. It is well known that African Americans are routinely harassed by police in proportion to whites and I find it weird that any whites would see a need for an #AllLivesMatter campaign. It would be like white people asking for a White History Month or something. Unnecessary and odd.

So thanks for sharing your perspective. It seems I am learning to think differently about race and the whole white privelege thing. It is strange for me to think of myself as priveleged because I am not used to thinking of myself that way but yeah, in terms of skin colour, I agree I certainly am priveleged. It is an eye opener. I realise now that when I watch TV most of the faces on there are white like mine, when I open a magazine ditto etc We whites have plenty of representation and are doing just fine really! So thank you fo ropening my eyes.

Hope you ahd a good day today. I must go get some shut eye as it is my birthday tommorow and I need the energy to get through the day and the evening somehow!

startrek90 · 04/03/2020 10:01

It always amazes me how any discussion about threats of violence against children, and in particular girls, by men gets derailed or ignored to talk about how unfair it is on poor men being called on it.

For once the men making these sort of calls for violence are actually being called on it. But never mind let's ignore the male violence and intimidation in favour of a discussion on how unfair it is that they are getting some shame- not legal consequences--just shame. Not one of those men cared about what could happen to a schoolgirl or any of the schoolchildren they were threatening, but somehow they are the real victims

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 04/03/2020 11:12

Puffmais/GuineaSomethingGood

That's a graceful and thoughtful apology/reply. Tb(brutally)h, your spat with Communist did get incredibly tedious to bystanders, so it's great to see that something good and reflective came out of it Brew

puffmais · 04/03/2020 15:21

Oops, yes, apologies to you and bystanders as well Blush

CanIhelpyouatall · 04/03/2020 16:37

FWIW I have seen black Gammon on Facebook, sharing the Gollywog photo and Anti Muslim stuff. They do exist.

CommunistLegoBloc · 04/03/2020 20:21

@puffmais happy birthday for tomorrow! Thank you for coming back with such a thoughtful response and for actually thinking about things after a fairly tense series of posts- a really rare quality and utterly to your credit. I have taken a lot away from this too. Have some cake on me Cake

Indiatango · 02/06/2021 07:52

What a racist you are. Any race can be racist and there is no requirement of a power structure to be racist.

popehilarious · 02/06/2021 08:09

THIS THREAD IS OVER A YEAR OLD

Not sure why it's been dug up just to fire insults to an unspecified person.
