Where can I go in Wales?

Want to escape and clear my head for a few days. Looking for somewhere I can walk but not too isolated as I'll be on my own and want to feel safe etc. Some greenery and waterfalls maybe. A few shops and cafes to potter around in would be nice?

Barmouth or Aberystwyth?

Northernsoullover · 02/03/2020 17:05

Tenby.

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 17:10

Or inland, Llandrindod Wells, lots of beautiful parks & gardens to wander around.

boatyardblues · 02/03/2020 17:10

There is a lovely long sandy beach with dunes in Tenby and access to the coastal path. The walk east from Tenby towards Saundersfoot is pleasant too, so options if you are getting to your destination by public transport. There are good walks further along the coast path and inland if you have a car.

Tywyn or Aberdovey, or further north Llandudno or Betwy-y-Coed?

SkiingIsHeaven · 02/03/2020 17:13

Anglesey

I'd go and stay in Llanthony Priory (not a priory anymore, just a fantastic b&b: I stayed in the room at the top of the tower!). It's in a wooded valley in the Vale of Ewyas, north of Abergavenny. You are surrounded by woods and walks (eg Offa's Dyke path passes nearby) and the Priory is a real hub for walkers / riders / cyclists (there's also a campsite and holiday cottages I think) so there's always someone around and to chat to if you like.

No phone signal though, but for me that means full on de-stress! Photo is the view from my bedroom window.

Aberaeron.

Have something delicious in the Hive or the Harbourmaster. Enjoy the coloured houses on the harbour, walk along the river. Walk along the footpath to Llanerchaeron (NT) and go around the gardens and have tea in the teashop.

Also get chips from the Celtic.

Gaze out to sea.

Aberystwyth is just up the coast, more lovely walking.

I've made myself want to do this now and might have to make time to go to Llanerchaeron next week! (Check opening though as it's winter still really.)

Penally Abbey hotel - about a mile along the beach from Tenby but avoids the noise in the town. Lovely hotel, peaceful location and lots of nice walks. If you are travelling by train then there is a request stop at Penally so you don't have to cab it from Tenby.

Troels · 02/03/2020 17:22

North South or mid?

RightestPersonOnMN · 02/03/2020 17:23

Lots of parks in Llandrindod Wells? There’s rock park, which is nice enough but what other parks are there?

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 02/03/2020 17:24

Another vote for Barmouth - I just got back from there and all around was stunningly beautiful.

winterinmadeira · 02/03/2020 17:25

Llandudno would be my choice.

MinnieMountain · 02/03/2020 17:26

Base yourself in St Davids or Newport and walk the Pembrokeshire coast path.

Milicentbystander72 · 02/03/2020 17:32

Anglesey def. you have a myriad of different beaches (sand dunes, long sandy beaches with inlets, pebble beaches, lighthouses). Nice cosy pubs, arty independent shops in Beaumaris or Menai Bridge.

It's a short hop in the car to Caernarfon, beautiful woodlands and river walks in Betws-y-Coed or Beddgelert......

Gamble66 · 02/03/2020 17:33

Barmouth - stunningly beautiful 🤣?
Tenby or the Gower are ideal if you want cafes and shops as well as walking
Mid WLes is beautiful but short of retail action except for Aberystwyth which has sone lovely independent retailers x

Jellykat · 02/03/2020 17:34

Definitely Newport, Pembs..3 lovely cafes, pizza place, pubs, 2 galleries, clothes shop, book/ antique shop and Wholefood shop/ deli.

Lovely walks up Carningli mountain and along the coastal path for as far as you want to go, or walk along the estuary to the beach.

ExplodingCarrots · 02/03/2020 17:34

Pembrokeshire . Either Tenby area or St Davids . Both areas have plenty of places to walk and got the beautiful coastal path.

RightestPersonOnMN · 02/03/2020 17:39

Barmouth & Borth are Birmingham on Sea. Full of daytripping brummies. Not pretty. Barmouth does have a massive beach though. Loads of sand if you like that.

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 17:40

Llandrindod Lake Park, and nearby Llysdinam Gardens, or do they not count?
Reading other posts, Llanthony Priory sounds fab!

RaininSummer · 02/03/2020 17:40

These all sound lovely. Going to save this for when I need an escape from life .

RightestPersonOnMN · 02/03/2020 17:40

The areas aren't that pretty, not the day tripping brummies. Apologies to any brummies reading.

RightestPersonOnMN · 02/03/2020 17:42

Smile Ada. I forgot about the lake. Llysdinam is Newbridge but close enough Wink

noideaatallreally · 02/03/2020 17:43

If you want to head north - Menai Bridge for food. Aber Falls, Betws Y Coed, Bedd Gelert for waterfalls and walks, many, many beautiful beaches on Anglesey.

ProfessorHasturLaVista · 02/03/2020 17:47

Dolgellau. Lovely pubs, walks (you could walk to Barmouth if you like!), busy without being rammed.
