Where can I go in Wales?

Want to escape and clear my head for a few days. Looking for somewhere I can walk but not too isolated as I'll be on my own and want to feel safe etc. Some greenery and waterfalls maybe. A few shops and cafes to potter around in would be nice?

I'm leaning towards Llandudno. I'd love Pembrokeshire but that's a bit far West. Is Llandudno quite good for both walks and shops? I can't really tell by pictures x

Rhayader, try Nannerth farm, the loft has fantastic views. Lots of lovely walks in the Elan Valley. You also badger watch in the tree house at the farm.

ceilihouse · 02/03/2020 17:54

Betws y coed all day Long it's my escape of reality lovely walks that you can get lost in your mind on, nice little pubs for drinks and food,

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 17:58

Barmouth is the starting point for some classic walks, especially around the Mawddach Estuary and towards Dolgellau, and the famous Barmouth Panorama Walk, worth a google @NeverYouMind123, to see if they are what you fancy.

HoppyHop · 02/03/2020 17:58

Llandudno is a Victorian seaside town. Mainly hotels along the front with the shops/theatre behind. Good selection of chain and independent shops. Walks up the Orme give great views. Maybe out of season for the train up there. Often seals in the bays.
Can highly recommend Dylans if you fancy a great meal.

itssquidstella · 02/03/2020 17:59

Crickhowell! Stay at the Bear.

QueenoftheIceAge · 02/03/2020 18:02

Hay on Wye; great independent shops and loads of good bookshops, great cafes, walks up Hay Bluff and Twmpa or along the Wye Valley walk, or the whole of the Brecon Beacons to choose from. Loads of nice places to stay too.

noideaatallreally · 02/03/2020 18:06

Llandudno is a good base. The Orme is lovely for walk. I do recommend Bedd Gelet or Betws Y Coed as a day trip from there.

FreezerBird · 02/03/2020 18:08

Crickhowell! Stay at the Bear

Crickhowell was hit really badly by flooding a couple of weeks ago so I would bear that in mind as they'll still be cleaning up. (The Bear have posted on social media this week though to remind people they're still there!)

Borth is not Brum-on-Sea at this time of year and I had the impression OP might be planning the trip quite soon.

OldEvilOwl · 02/03/2020 18:08

Ruthin - and walk up Moel famau

RiftGibbon · 02/03/2020 18:10

I second Aberaeron. There are some amazing beaches not too far away too.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/03/2020 18:13

"The areas [Barmouth and Borth] aren't that pretty, not the day tripping brummies. "

That's a matter of opinion isn't it. I find them pretty.

HelenaJustina · 02/03/2020 18:14

You can do a fab walk/cycle from Barmouth to Dolgellau along a very well maintained flat path. (Or the opposite way) It’s stunningly beautiful and there is a brilliant cafe in Dolgellau.

HelenaJustina · 02/03/2020 18:15

Cross post with @AdaColeman

CassidyStone · 02/03/2020 18:20

You'll enjoy Llandudno. You can walk along the pier, and then go up the Great Orme (there's a bus if the trams and tourist train aren't running at this time of year). Go to the Rest and Be Thankful cafe for Welsh cake and a cappuccino. Someone else has mentioned Dylan's on the seafront for dinner. You can go to the Little Orme and walk round to Angel Bay to see the seals.

AdaColeman · 02/03/2020 18:26

Conwy is worth a trip from Llandudno, wonderful castle and cosy pubs.

june2007 · 02/03/2020 18:26

Pembrokeshire.
Snowdonia, Pensarn near Hallech.
Isle of Anglesey

Papergirl1968 · 02/03/2020 18:46

Barmouth is beautiful and as for it and Borth being full of day tripping Brummies, I think that’s rather rude.
Wales as a whole, especially mid and North Wales, are popular with Midlanders, who support the economy of seaside towns and tourist attractions.
I’m from the very edge of the Black Country (and therefore not a Brummie!) and I love Tywyn, Barmouth and that whole area.

Papergirl1968 · 02/03/2020 18:48

That was to RightestPersonOnMN by the way - who clearly isn’t Hmm

itssquidstella · 02/03/2020 18:48

@FreezerBird oh no, I hadn't realised! That's a shame, it's such a wonderful place.

Porthmadog is nice and there's a Dylan's there too - great restaurant!

Brecon. You can walk up Pen y Fan and there are a number of circular walks that take in waterfalls

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/03/2020 18:54

Anglesey.

I love Llandudno but it might not be to everyone’s taste.

CassidyStone · 02/03/2020 18:57

Barmouth is a beautiful seaside town with lovely shops, bars, restaurants and a fabulous beach. Yes, lots of people from the Midlands visit the town, and why shouldn't they? They support the local traders and tourist attractions. I'm glad that people want to go to the seaside in Wales. I was in Barmouth yesterday, after visiting Harlech Castle (all castles are free to visit on St David's day) and it was lovely.

NeverYouMind123 · 02/03/2020 19:35

Why might Llandudno not be to everyone's taste?
