It's my second test. I failed my first (not badly - one major and three minors). But due to insane (we're talking 4/5 months) waiting times at my local test centre I've had to book it at a different test centre in an area I'm much less familiar with and none of the routes are available online as it's quite new. My instructor and I have spent the last few lessons in that general area but it is still freaking me out. And yes I know the whole point is I should be able to drive anywhere but it is much harder when it's somewhere you don't know.

I am completely freaking out, butterflies in my stomach, on the verge of tears. The examiner last time was hostile and rude and I'm really worried I'll get a similar one tomorow. Handhold?!

Come on now, calm down and think rationally. You know the area, your instructor has made sure of that. You've had more practice since last time, and you only failed by one major and 3 minors. You can do this! Driving examiners by their very nature are hostile and rude, I think it's in their job description.
Have a relaxing bath, watch something stupid on Netflix and get an early night.
Good luck for tomorrow, what time do I need to be crossing my fingers?

bellalou1234 · 01/03/2020 19:37

Driving tests are horrific.. it took me 3 times I'd feel I'll... I once done one in another city, due to waiting times, just try and stay calm, deep breaths and itll all be over in 40.minutes or so.. fingers crossed for you

SouthwarkRoad · 01/03/2020 19:37

The last guy was just so mean, not even a smile or even a hello. Would have made me so much less nervous if he'd just been even a tiny bit friendly. I was on the verge of tears by the end which honestly isn't like me at all!

I am going to be mainlining beta blockers. Test is at 1.30. I am bricking it.

My driving test examiner was one of the loveliest people I've ever met!

You CAN do this. You know everything you need to know. This area might be a little more unfamiliar but the rules of the road are EXACTLY the same. You will be fine.

Weekday28 · 01/03/2020 19:47

I've been once to the area where my test is on Tuesday. You'll be fine watch some clips on youtube of anything your not sure about and try and be as calm as possible. Good luck!

CassidyStone · 01/03/2020 19:48

Go easy on the beta-blockers. Hopefully tomorrow's examiner will crack a smile and maybe even say hello. There's no need to for anyone to be actively hostile, although I do think some people in a position of power enjoy intimidating others. Bus drivers who wait until the person running for the bus has reached the door, and then accelerating away, leaving them behind, is another example.
After tomorrow, your public transport days will be behind you anyway Flowers

sindylouwho · 01/03/2020 19:53

I could have wrote your post!!! My situation was identical. Even down to the horrible instructor. I took my second test in another area that I wasn't familiar with and on a Monday too! It was loads better as I could actually drive by then. Just stay calm and think. Don't rush anything. Take your time. Good luck!!

SouthwarkRoad · 01/03/2020 20:12

I got the "tell me" question wrong right away the first time (that was one of the minors) and instead of just saying "ok, thank you" and marking it as a minor, he said "nope, not even close. not the best start" - which obviously made me 200x more nervous!

SouthwarkRoad · 01/03/2020 20:13

Also the area I was learning in all residential streets were 20mph. The new area they change from 20 to 30 all the time and there aren't always obvious signs to tell you. If I go too fast I'll be failed for speeding, if I go too slowly I'll be failed for driving too slowly!

SouthwarkRoad · 01/03/2020 20:57

I really don't know why I am so nervous ffs. If I fail I can just take the bloody thing again.

CassidyStone · 01/03/2020 21:02

@SouthwarkRoad stop getting your tits in a tangle. Grin

It's highly unlikely your driving instructor tomorrow will be as bloody rude and offensive as the first twat. Just keep an eye on the road signs and remember YOU CAN DRIVE. You wouldn't be taking your test if you weren't competent.

Good luck, I will be sending you positive vibes at 1.30pm tomorrow.

Northernsoullover · 01/03/2020 21:02

The beta blockers work wonders! You should be cool as a cucumber.

SouthwarkRoad · 01/03/2020 21:06

I've just had to take one as I'm already flipping out and I won't sleep tonight if I don't.

SouthwarkRoad · 02/03/2020 10:46

bloody hyperventilating! this is completely ridiculous, I'm not a nervous driver. keep forgetting all the cocking show me tell me questions.

OP posts:
SouthwarkRoad · 02/03/2020 10:50

Also if you're over 60 there's nothing stopping you from ignoring the WHO advice, just don't complain when you're dealing with the consequences.

SouthwarkRoad · 02/03/2020 10:51

whoops wrong thread!

@SouthwarkRoad

How did your driving test go?

SouthwarkRoad · 02/03/2020 17:44

sadly I failed abysmally, 3 major faults and 3 minors. The majors were for utterly ridiculous things I've never done before (such as forgetting to turn off my signal ffs!!!) , and I sailed through the lesson I had beforehand. I just can't seem to cope with the pressure of the test.

The examiner was lovely. Said I could clearly drive but had an issue with test nerves.

Northernsoullover · 02/03/2020 17:55

Keep going. I failed my 4th despite beta blockers. Passed 5th time

swirls3468 · 02/03/2020 18:04

@SouthwarkRoad bless you! I know how hard it is, I had my first test today and failed, it's fucking shite and doesn't really give a good view of what you're normally driving like. I only got 3 minors and the test went really well and then I got the parallel park and completely well and truly messed it up so failed on the basis of that. It is frustrating because I am a safe driver. But just gotta do it again. Keep going till you get there! It's so expensive as well that's another concern. When have you booked your next one? Good luck x

SouthwarkRoad · 02/03/2020 19:02

I just feel like I actually can drive, I'm just useless at the test. Next one booked for 4 April which was the earliest I could get. Will try to get a cancellation if I can.

CassidyStone · 02/03/2020 19:11

Just look on the two tests you've done as practice runs. You've got a month to cram in some more driving experience. I passed on the third attempt, with a female examiner. Just remind yourself that you CAN drive. You've just got to get through the test, and you will. Good luck for next time and try not to be too despondent, you're not on your own, very few people sail through their driving test without any problem.

toddlertantrumhell · 02/03/2020 21:10

Just to echo others... you just have to keep going. I passed on my 5th attempt and I could drive just hated the test. Dig deep, you will pass!!!!!! Lots of deep breathing to clear your head on the day!
