Baby Umbilical Cord Normal? TMI picture attached

Hi

Does this cord look normal? Or do I need to take DD to Doctor?
She’s 12 days old, it doesn’t smell. The middle is obviously a bit yellow but isn’t oozing.

Are you giving it plenty of air time and being careful not to cover it with the nappy?

BecauseReasons · 29/02/2020 20:23

I'd get the health visitors to check it at your weighing appointment.

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:24

She’s tiny so tricky not to cover with nappy as when you fold it it comes back to but could definitely give it more airing

Looks how both my DS and DDs looked a few days before they dried and fell off! Although I can’t remember what day that was Op.

If DD is 12 days you must be due the Hv? Or have they just been. Always a good person to check with

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:25

HV due on Tuesday

(both mine were teenie tiny so might be a tiny baby issue too)

BecauseReasons · 29/02/2020 20:27

You can cut a flap out of the nappy to give it air time.

Mulledmum · 29/02/2020 20:30

Ring the midwife in the morning to assess it as it looks to be infected rather than wait until Tuesday. Gently clean the area with cool boiled water too. Hope you get it sorted

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:32

I called the midwife led unit and they said as long as no smell, redness or blood and temp then should be ok but obviously they haven’t seen it.
They advised to wash with cool boiled water which I’ve done

They really are the grottiest things aren’t they. Keep an eye on it but it looks ok

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:35

@LittleBearPad - they really are 🤢

Looks normal to me. My second Borns cord looked like this and I remember thinking why is it still so 'fleshy' looking at the belly button rather than dried up!

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:36

Should they just fall away clean or is that yellow part of the cord?

Maxamill · 29/02/2020 20:36

Looks normal to me, they just look awful I think they look worse when they dry up!

I'd get your health visitor to double check. I could never keep the fold down on my sons nappy so I just fastened it underneath and his dried up really quick!

babyowlie · 29/02/2020 20:37

@IfYoureNotIntoYoga that’s what made me post

Infected. I’ve had this 2x. First time 13 years ago they gave me cx powder it sorted it out in about 10 minutes. I now believe it’s not used. 5 years ago they gave me antibiotics. I loathed giving them to him but of course did it. I would see a gp tonight. Give it loads of air. All clothes off blanket on floor. Hold it up if needs be. Good luck xx

Pidgythe2nd · 29/02/2020 20:40

Looks ok to me. My youngest’s was like this and really smelly! A rotten smell. Confused
It was still ok tho!
If the skin around it goes red I was told that’s when to worry. Clean it with cooled boiled water and fold the front of the nappy down so air can circulate.

Pidgythe2nd · 29/02/2020 20:43

It’s not at all red around so doesn’t look infected to me.
I was told that bacteria on the skin cause it to rot and fall off - that is normal.
It looks a bit gungy/damp but the skin isn’t red and infected.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 29/02/2020 20:45

Looks fine to me. They do smell a bit. It's essentially a peice of a body part that's rotting, it's going to smell a bit. The skin around it looks a normal colour which is good. Cool boiled water and let it air out. Doesn't look like it will be there for much longer.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 29/02/2020 20:53

@babyowlie you will be glad to know it did drop off eventually and we had no problems with it apart from the look.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 29/02/2020 21:06

I see a lot of umbilical cords in my job disgusting things that they are! and it looks fine to me. Bath it and let it air dry it will come off soon enough

MrsPatrickDempsey · 29/02/2020 21:11

Agree with pp - as a midwife and HV looks fine to me.
