Civil Service jobs

Could anyone who works for, or has knowledge of, the Civil Service help me with a query I have about a job I've seen advertised? It's for the MoJ and the location is 'national' - in practice, what does this mean? Would I be working in whichever MoJ building in closest to me? I don't have a car so need to have a good idea of where I'd be working before I know if the location is doable for me. Thanks!

It means there are jobs all over the place, but although you can state a preference as to where you would like, there's no guarantee you'd get posted there. They would offer you a position in wherever they have the business need, which is not necessarily local to you.

Thanks for explaining. Do you know at what stage of the application I'd be told where the job would be?

Is it a recruitment round for lots of people, or the sort of job they'd need all round the country?

Usually if it says National, then it could be done at any of their offices but could be some travel for meetings. Is there a contact email or phone number - it's a sensible question to ask them.

The location will be in the application pack. Might even include some home working. If you get to interview you can ask.

jackparlabane I think it's the sort of job they'd need all round the country. It says there are multiple jobs available and it is an admin job so I think it's the sort of thing that could be done all around the country. I'll definitely phone to clarify if I decide to apply.

MrsGrindah Thanks!

Contact the name in the ad.

I've just been interviewed for a MoJ job, SW region, and I'm in Cornwall - the office will be either Cardiff or Bristol. It says nothing about home working in the ad, but this role (not admin) is going to mean WFH a LOT.

dimbles · 29/02/2020 21:02

CornishPorsche I'd be delighted if it included lots of WFH! The only way I'm going to know for sure is if I contact the name in the ad, as you suggested. I hope your interview went well!

I think it did, but who knows with these things!

I know the MoJ is significantly downsizing its estate, so there are fewer and fewer offices nationally. The only problem for you would mean that even with home working, you'd still be attached to an office and have to travel into it on whatever basis they ask of you. If that's 2 counties away and you don't drive....the logistics could be something to look in to. Also, those trips would be considered your normal commute, so no costs would be covered.

CornishPorsche Hopefully it's not too far away. Bristol is only a 20 minute or so train journey for me so that would be absolutely fine, but Cardiff or London would be too far (unless it was only very occasionally). I don't actually know where the other offices are!
