Ttc while breastfeeding.

Hello! DH and I have decided that we would like to start trying to conceive another baby soon.

As it took a long time (approximately 4 years) to finally fall pregnant with ds and there is a family history of early menopause I'm eager to get trying ASAP.

I keep reading that breast feeding is not a reliable form of contraception, however ds still feeds multiple times throughout the day and about 2 or 3 very short feeds at night my periods aren't showing any signs of returning.

Is there anyway that I can continue breastfeeding and give myself a good chance of conceiving? Or is it best to just wait until ds is ready to stop and my periods return to normal?

How old is DS?

People vary a lot as to when their periods come back while breastfeeding. Some come back after a few months despite exclusive breastfeeding, for other women, they have to pretty much stop feeding before periods return. It's up to you to decide whether to let your DS wean when he is ready, or when you are ready.
If conceiving soon is a priority then you will need to reduce the frequency of feeds, until your periods return. You may not need to cut then out entirely, as many women are still able to breastfeed while pregnant

I was ttc #2 while still bfing #1. However we'd been trying for 6 months and then I cut down to only one feed a day and conceived that month.
So you may need to cut down.

I've got pregnant several times whilst breastfeeding - 4 times (one mc) before my periods have even returned. (I have 8 children) You can be ovulating before your periods actually return. I was always feeding lots too. You won't know until you try tbh. You could try tracking with ovulation tests to see if you're ovulating.

I fell pregnant whilst breastfeeding. I think I had one very light period once but then didn't have another so when I found out I was pregnant I didn't know how far along I was. DS was 1 and was feeding 2-3 times a day.

Thank you for the replies. Ds is only 10 months and while he does have breakfast, lunch and dinner and drinks water I don't think he is anywhere near ready to stop breastfeeding and tbh I don't think I am either.

I know he's so young, but it took us years to conceive him so I'm mostly wanting to get a head start on what I imagine to be a long journey.

I didn't even realise ovulation tests worked if you're not having periods so that's good to know, I'll make sure to stock up on those.
