What colour would you paint this wall?

DH and I recently moved into a new home and are getting to grips with redecorating. At the moment our living room is distinctly uninspiring- white walls, boring grey plastic blind, boring grey carpet.

We want to paint one of the walls a different colour, just to make the room a bit less dull and flat. I’ve attached a photo of the room from the old sales listing online, so this isn’t how we’ve got it furnished. The furniture is a mixture of DH’s old ugly black Ikea furniture consisting of a dining table and chairs in the corner to the left of the photo, and the TV on a low stand in the corner in the middle, and a small coffee table. We’ve also got my antique bureau, a beige sofa and an Ikea poang chair with the hillared dark blue cover. We’ll replace the blinds and the black furniture in due course but we’re stuck with it for the time being.

The wall we want to paint is the one on the left hand side. All the walls are blank at the minute but we’ll put up pictures etc eventually, and I’m hoping to get a Leonid Afremov painting to go above the radiator, which we’re going to get a white cover for.

Originally we were going to go for a nice deep blue colour, but the thing is the window is north and slightly west facing and doesn’t really get any direct sunlight, so it’s never very bright in there, and my concern was that a dark and cool toned colour might make the room feel cold. So now we’re thinking a warmer tone would be better, perhaps a shade of red?

Any and all suggestions welcome and appreciated!

Are you keeping the grey carpet?

I instantly thought a navy or gem stone green based on grey carpet.

PepsiLola · 26/02/2020 20:49

Or for lighter (if you're keeping the carpet) duckegg?

Navy either side of the fireplace. Will make it nice and cosy.

We are stuck with the carpet for now unfortunately. It’s the same all over the flat Sad

Might be worth mentioning we’ve painted our bedroom “feature wall” a lovely shade of teal (rest of the walls are somewhere between white and cream) so we don’t want too similar a colour in the living room.

Damson?

PepsiLola · 26/02/2020 21:13

A dusty pink would look lovely with grey also

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/02/2020 21:21

Crushed aloe green.

fastliving · 26/02/2020 21:24

I was going to say teal....
But if not teal how about an earthy raspberry?

For a few years I had a darkish grey carpet so I painted my walls lilac above the picture rail and pale yellow below it , I loved it for many years and only redecorated because the gutters leaked ruining the walls

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/02/2020 07:38

Which painting are you getting? I’d pick a colour from that

stormsurfer · 27/02/2020 07:41

Light sage green?
Ochre?

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/02/2020 07:59

Farrow and Ball brassica?
Or pitch blue?

If you're keeping the carpet I think I'd personally rather paint all the walls for something more tonal, then pick a complimentary tone for that side wall if you still want the variety -the white is stark and a colour against it on a feature wall might look a bit dated.

I'd also wait until I knew exactly what the artwork was in order to pick a colour that compliments it and pull the room together that way.

In all honesty I'd likely remove the radiator, and wouldn't want a feature wall highlighting one so would at best get a cover and hang the artwork above that, but I appreciate that is a bigger job/costs money/isn't necessarily feasible or convenient etc.

InteriorDespairer · 27/02/2020 11:42

We are planning on getting a cover for the radiator, probably something like this. Removing it altogether isn’t really an option, we currently have single glazed windows so the room would be bloody chilly without it!

The walls are more of a creamy off-white than stark white if that makes any difference...

WRT to picking a colour from the painting- Leomid Afremov is a palette knife artist, his paintings have pretty much every colour under the sun in them so it’d be hard to find a colour that won’t match really! I’ve got my eye on the one attached.

Aqua? Just not too cool a colour, so a pale teal.

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/02/2020 12:43

With that painting I’d go for a bright aqua/ turquoise, a rich purple or a deep orange/ ochre depending on which you’re drawn to more.

Howmanysleepsnow · 27/02/2020 12:45

Or a deep blue (with burnt orange accents in the room), but you said you didn’t want that.

userxx · 27/02/2020 12:50

I have a few of his prints - love his stuff. My house is small so I've stuck with white walls and the colours on the canvas just bring it all to life.

Magicpaintbrush · 27/02/2020 13:17

eau de nil or yellow ochre

MiddleClassProblem · 27/02/2020 13:25

Just a word of warning, someone could reverse image search that photo and get your new address...

springydaff · 27/02/2020 13:56

Go to art galleries and see what colours they use to make the paintings pop
