Is it really possible that this virus started with one person being infected by a bat or such like? And it has spread to this extent? Does anyone remember the TV series Survivors???

I work in public health. Yes, it’s possible. Lots of infections begin this way, though it’s also possible for one animal to infect a few people, depending on the mode of transmission.
