Prospective homebuyer - survey brought up damp in all rooms. I have asthma triggered by mould/damp/dust mites - is it worth pursuing the house? Getting a second opinion

Victorian terrace house - good in most other ways and one of the few properties in my price range (probably for that reason).

Anyone with asthma been able to fix a damp victorian house? Eyes hurt, migraine and feeling a bit wheezy - but house has not been lived in for a year left cold and closed up (I'm hoping ventilation, putting the heating on and a strong dehumidifer will do the job at the very least)

Please tell me your experience - only if you have allergies/asthma triggered by mould/damp and have experience of living in a damp house.

If the property is showing signs of damp get a survey done to show where the moisture is coming from. If it's rising damp a damp proof membrane will stop the issue.

Seal the walls to stop the mould coming through and use mould resistant paint.

Having the property at a constant temp will help.

The other fact which may cause damp is the wrong type of plaster finish being used. If it's cement based it won't let the walls breathe and will lead to condensation and then mould forming

Thanks for the reply. Will it eradicate all damp permanently? Just worried as I’m sensitive to it but can’t afford a newer property which won’t have the issue.

A damp proofing will stop the rising damp. The survey will pinpoint any other issues. The surveyor should also be able to say a rough cost for any remedial work to help negotiate the purchase price
