Easter Tree question

UnitedRoad · 25/02/2020 14:16

I was just talking to my mum about what to buy my nephews and new baby niece for Easter. My sister in law doesn’t want them to have chocolate. My mum suggested getting them a book and an ornament for their Easter tree each.

I had no idea there was such a thing as an Easter tree! It wasn’t something I ever saw when my children were little, unless I was oblivious. Are they popular now and where do you find decorations?

I have an Easter tree. Is usually a blossom branch I get from the woods which I hang painted wooden eggs on. It was a feature of my childhood in Germany and I find it very cheering. Expect loads of MNetters to be sniffy about it though.

Definitely not a thing I've ever heard of! Just get them a book and a stuffed bunny or something!

I fully intend buying an Easter tree now that I have my DD. Again, it's a German thing and incredibly pagan. But we don't buy ornaments - we make them.

We do...but im pagan so less for 'easter'

BarbaraofSeville · 25/02/2020 14:34

Yes it's a thing.

I don't know how long it has been, but John Lewis and I assume other retailers are quite happy to sell you a tree plus egg shaped and Easter themed decorations to hang on it.

I came across Easter trees a few years ago. Normally I hate things like that (Halloween trees... Ugh) but the ones I saw were lovely! They were more like a bundle of smallish branches than trees, and had l hollow eggs hanging on them. They were only about knee height or so, so not very "in your face". A lot of the decorations seem to be pastel-coloured eggs.

I have an easter tree. It's just a few branches I picked up in the park painted white with easter decorations hanging off. It's all colourful and pretty and I love it.

Easter is so much better than Christmas Grin

Everyone being nice about Easter trees. Last year I was on a thread where they were getting a bashing

UnitedRoad · 25/02/2020 14:52

@Rocketinapocket I do think it sounds nice. When I googled I found details of it being a German tradition, and my sister in law isn’t, but she goes love a trend, so maybe it’s going to be popular here?

@AllStar14 You’d think that would be a good idea but soft toys are something we are NOT allowed to buy them. I’m gutted as I love jellycat, and want to bombard them with lobsters and crabs and broccoli

I actually really love the idea of a white painted branch with handmade decorations in pastel colours. I know anything I’d produce wouldn’t be as pretty as what I’m imagining, but I might have a go.

Thank you!

Books and craft sets are good for Easter, or cute wellies/ raincoats!

DMCWelshcakes · 25/02/2020 14:57

I've had one ever since I moved to Austria. I cut down some twiggy branches from the garden and then hang decorated eggs on them. I do it on Easter Saturday as it feels wrong to have it up during Holy Week.

It cheers me up that spring is on the way so I'm not really care what other people think of it.

ClashCityRocker · 25/02/2020 15:00

Also remember them as a child in Germany.

Ours was just a branch sprayed white with home made decorations.

I think they're lovely and wouldn't mind at all seeing more of them over here.

FruityWidow · 25/02/2020 15:01

We used to decorate eggs and hang them on a tree at primary school but we didn't do one at home.

Summergarden · 25/02/2020 15:04

Love our Easter tree, we’ve had it for years.

Gisela Graham make a good range of decorations for them or if you search on EBay for Easter tree decorations I’m sure you’ll find plenty.
