Little spot of good news Smile

I know in the end it’s a commercial decision but good for Tesco nevertheless.

(I did look and couldn’t see another thread in this. Apologies if I missed one.)

Thanks. I’ve been practising my French on random pieces from Le Monde this month. So that piece is definitely a better use of my time. I’ll print it off and have a go.

This thread is Hmm

I look as white as white can be, so luckily have never suffered the prejudice against people of colour when they see me. Although if they ever saw me with my dad we were both insulted, more so my dad who is Asian. (Long complicated story. He's Asian, was adopted by a white couple)

If my dad ever needed a plaster it stuck out like a sore thumb (ha) as it wasn't even close.to.his skin colour.
Now, at 54 he finally has something that will blend in a bit better.
He shouldn't have had to wait until he was 54 years old. This should have been an option all his life.

It is the epitome of white privilege to not even register that ‘nude’ plasters etc are designed to vaguely not contrast with your skin until it is pointed out and contrasted with a new-fangled darker toned plaster. Had you spent your life looking at a pale plaster on your dark knees you would know.

And please don’t start with the ‘I’m not privileged, I xxxx (insert challenge to equality of choice ). White privilege refers solely to the freedom from discrimination over skin colour. Whatever else may or may not be going in in yours or a PoC’s life.

To the person responsible for plaster stocks in a school;

I think clear plasters for each and every person is ok.
Or stock the full range of ‘skin tones plasters (and if Tesco ones are more expensive tell your suppliers that you are moving to clear because they don’t stock a representative range)
Or
Offer bright colour / picture / novelty plasters to all and NO ‘skin tones.

But kids love those so plaster requests will no doubt increase Grin

It's mad that this is only now being done. Standard plasters are quite obviously 'flesh' toned, but only for white people.

I've wondered before what colour plasters are in countries where the population is generally darker skinned, as you'd think that they would too be darker?

I suppose up to now, one solution would be clear or novelty plasters, but hopefully Tesco have woken other manufacturers up a bit. Maybe if the range is popular, they'll expand it to more shades?

In the areas I've been to they are all pink too.

There is a website somewhere cataloguing packaging and advertising prevalent across Africa.

Baby products stick out particularly in memory as featuring smiling causcasian, blonde babies but many other product categories too.

Only ethnically-appropriate hair and skin products seemed to use better imagery across the board.

So if that is any clue, probably not.

A PP upthread did mention Myanmar as an exception in skin tone-appropriate medical supplies.
