Best songs from musicals?

I’m a big musicals fan and the kids and I often listen to songs from musicals on our Alexa in the house. I thought that I would make a playlist that we can listen to and download for in the car etc. We’ve got up to about 30 songs so far, lots from les mis and Hamilton (for me) and the Greatest Showman (for them).

Any recommendations for ones that I might not have thought about? It’s only a matter of time before I turn them into musical afficionados like me Grin

Andrew Lloyd Webber May be an elitist shit but he is behind some cracking songs. I like most of his except cats and phantom with a particular affection for evita.

Love the “oldies” too as mums a huge fan so Doris day galore, sondheim, Irving berlin, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein...

Favourite films:

Calamity Jane, wizard of oz, sound of music, the jazz singer (Neil diamond), the king and I, gypsy, oliver!, funny girl, evita, grease, Petes dragon, Chicago and...couple of controversial ones... rock of ages and the pitch perfect films.

Personal favourite songs:

Another suitcase (another hall)
I know him so well
Secret love
Something good
Love on the rocks
Hello again
Getting to know you
Everything’s coming up roses
If they could see me now
Hopelessly devoted
There are worse things I could do
There’s room for everyone
Cell block tango
I wannna know what love is
Cups song

I could go on for hours!

As I say having a mum who adored Doris day and a gran that was mad about Judy Garland and also had a granda who loved opera (which isn’t the same I know) means I love a good musical.

The whole of The Music Man!

And another vote for La Cage and Legally Blonde.

Dd top 3 musicals includes Hadestown

HippyChickMama · 24/02/2020 07:13

Dd (6) loves songs from musicals. Her favourites are lots of the ones already mentioned, anything from Frozen and I know him so well from Chess Grin
She also loves anything that has that musical big number feel to it, Total Eclipse of the Heart is one of her favourite songs Grin

Half a Sixpence seems to be a forgotten musical. I introduced my daughter to it recently and she loved it. We love " Flash Bang What a Picture", " Half a Sixpence" and "If the Rain's going to fall' from it.

myrtleWilson · 24/02/2020 07:22

OP if you've not discovered Magic at the Musicals radio station I'd recommend it - I enjoy an out of tune singalong on longer journeys now!

whoami24601 · 24/02/2020 07:22

I love Phantom - the whole soundtrack

Wicked - popular (my DD7 loves that one!)

Matilda - any really but Sometimes You Have To Be A Little Bit Naughty and Revolting Children are probably the best

All of Les Mis but esp A Little Fall Of Rain

LOVE a good musical!

Gdcs love several from South Pacific:

I’m going to wash that man right out of my hair
Dites-moi
I’m as corny as Kansa in August
A hundred and one pounds of fun
etc.

Lately they’ve loved one or two out of Oliver! (You’ve got to pick a pocket or two, Consider yourself our mate, courtesy of original clips on YouTube. Whole film too disturbing for them though, end bit with Bill Sykes doing Nancy in.

All the Sound of Music songs - we skip the scary-baddies bits of the film, though, they’re still very little.

I'm very old fashioned with my musicals so it would be Singin' in the Rain, Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Carousel and Meet Me in At Louis. All gorgeous.

Notice a few people have suggested Dear Evan Hansen, but not specifically Waving Through A Window, which I love

Have recently been listening to the cast recording of the recent NY production of Little Shop of Horrors since Jonathan Groff is wonderful.

Also, Spring Awakening (if your kids are old enough!)

doadeer · 24/02/2020 17:12

Hello young lovers from King and I
Wishing you were somehow here phantom of the Opera

PanicAtTheTesco · 24/02/2020 17:15

Witchend · 02/03/2020 02:28

My daughter has been obsessed with Half a Sixpence since she saw it a couple of years ago. (for the first time!)

There's also a musical about Shakespeare I heard a song from the other day and liked.
Also there was a nice version of Wind in the Willows my ds was in which had nice songs in.

Witchend · 02/03/2020 02:30

@Housewife2010 Half a Sixpence is coming back to the stage this year. My dd came shrieking from her room this afternoon to tell me.
Although it almost certainly won't have the wonderful Charlie Stemp as Arthur Kipps as he's now Bert in Mary Poppins.
